“You'll chortle, giggle and snigger more in 20 minutes with an F-Type than 20 days with a Boxster, even if the Porsche is technically - no surprises here - the better car. You pays your money...”

This is the crux of it for me.
A flawed car in many respects but still great fun.
Surely the main criteria for a sports car?

£68k for a four pot just seems utterly bonkers to me.
Especially when you consider a 20 year old Impreza/evo left the factory with the same number of cylinders and sane power.

Love the shape if you ignore the 1970's style shut lines.
The claustrophobic over-stuffed interior & the stupid size boot of the roadster reduces its appeal & practicality. Not being a pure BRITISH car I'm not ashamed to say that the Germans do it better.
Designed, engineered, constructed and sold in Britain but the only thing that counts is the nationality of the person signing the cheques is it?

Loved my F type coupe, looking back I think I would say it’s the only car I regret selling. My R8 Spyder is the superior car in every measurable way but I just don’t love it like I loved the big Jag.

Except neither of those are appropraite in this case.

I bet this 2.0 turbo lump is just like all others that we find in modern hot hatches. Loads of low-down twist, a no doubt untheatrical top-end and a poor sound track. And, let's be honest, there are much better FR chassis out there too.

£68,000 for this, or... an M2 Competition for much less. Hmm...
Or maybe a new Z4/Supra for quite a bit less too if you want a 2 seater!

2 things:

1 - £68k is the price with a lot of options and I'm pretty certain you're example of £5pm would have been without, and certainly 2nd hand or not list price.... So you're. Not comparing apples with apples

2 - I don't necessarily think cylinder count should dictate the price that shouldn't be dictated by everything about the car. If a McLaren P1 had a 4 pot engine yet EVERYTHING else was identical it'd still be worth more than £68k, as an example. Likewise, some very sophisticated 4 cylinder engines can cost a lot more to design and manufacture than many more simple but larger engines with more cylinders. As such, in those cases, those are justified in having a higher price.
1) I’ve just looked it up, the entry list price for the 3.0 V6 was £51,250 in 2015, admittedly, this would go up with some options and down with some haggling.

2) Agreed, cylinder counts are not the be all and end all but this isn’t an exotic engine. The V6 I drove was a little bit underwhelming.
For that sort of money, I’d want something with a bit of character. Sound is a big part of what brings a car to life.

Why has there never been a V8 manual? Was the same with the previous XJS, the V12's only came in automatic form frown

What is it then? Designed in the UK? Built in the UK? Is this a jab at the fact that the company is ultimately Indian? It can’t be that it’s not made 100% with British materials because all cars have a percentage of German bits in generally regardless of where they are built so that’s the only reason I can think of for the remark. If it wasn’t for that Indian money then Jaguar and Land Rover would both be dead now. Instead they employ thousands of UK workers directly and indirectly and produce a range of cars that’s massive compared to what they could ever manage on “British” money.

You're wrong there - the original V12 XJS was available as a manual in 1976/1977 but after that Jaguar claimed there was no suitable manual gearbox (so in reality they couldn't be a*sed)!

As for why there has never been a manual F-Type V8, who knows - but maybe they still weren't a*sed!

Aston Martin have found a manual gearbox for their V12, so a Jaguar V8 isn't likely to break that - but perhaps Jaguar still aren't a*sed. banghead

supercharged, almost 400hp and yet 0-60 in 5secs and tops out at 170....? I would have expected better than that.

At £80k specced up, and that's not for the "fast one" or the top of the range....

A Porsche Cayman S, is 25k cheaper and pisses all over the jag in every way.
lighter, faster, better handling, lap times, luxury, etc etc.etc...

its a VERY brave (or stupid) person, who would even consider buying one.

That’s preposterous.

The F-Type is the only time I’ve ever been close to buying a new car (when they were new). I seem to remember them being around £50k for the 3.0 coupe?
Jag [ricing has gone a bit silly.

I spec’d up an XF the other week, a 300 hp 4-pot petrol. I ticked most the options and it came out to £75k eek
Must be pretty similar to a similarly specced 300bhp 5 series, or E class or A6, no?
A few years ago I specced a 2.0 diesel A6 Avant to see how ridiculous it got. £72,000.

I'd have the Jag over the Porsche every day. Why ? Because when I walked away and looked back at the Jag I would think wow. As I walked away and looked at the Porsche I would think that looks crap wish I had purchased the Jag.

Imho of course smile

Wow...

For me, the the Jaguar is a far better looking car than the generic 718. It is also going to sound far better. And nope, I don't own the Jag and have had plenty of Porsches!

Not everyone is about track days. For many, owning a sportscar is about the theatre of it all, which I imagine the F Type delivers in spades.

Having a different opinion than you doesn't require people to be brave or stupid.

I wouldn't be sure the Cayman is more luxurious though. I regularly get people who compare a JLR product with a Porsche, and standard equipment is beter, materials are perceived to be nicer and better, and even finish is on a par - all in the eyes and opinion of regular customers.
Had to take a Macan in PX yesterday, didn't even have heated mirrors...

They are lovely looking cars, we looked at them earlier this year but the two main issues for us were the size of them and price.

I've no idea how something so big externally can have so little interior room. Worst of all is the width, we'd only have 5cm clearance to get it through our garage door, and then you need to get in/out of the thing of course.

Drove a 400 Sport demo. Dealer then offered it to us a few months later for £65k but wouldn't budge. Bonkers. If you want something like that then save £20k+ and get a Mustang V8 (which is even wider!).

I've spec'd an XF 300hp 4 pot petrol R sport. £ 426.00 INC VAT per month on a 3+23 lease.
