A whole article that doesn’t address why they failed - because it looked hideous. And the phantom looked good. Design is so important.

£60k would buy you a very nice nearly new S Class, 2 possibly 3 generations on from the one this abomination was based on. Just naff.

I went to an AMG event at Goodwood in 2005 and everyone else there was hammering the life out of SL55s , CLS55s and SLK55s. I managed to persuade them to let me have 3 laps in an SLR which was fascinating. Most interesting of all was a Maybach 57S, the one with over 600bhp, with a chauffeur looking chap hanging around it . He looked like he was waiting there all day for his boss to go home so I struck up a conversation. It turned out the car was indeed available for drives , but on the road not on the track. So off we went . What a car! The roads round Goodwood are generally narrow but there were a few overtaking areas where the thing absolutely flew. It was black with tan interior and being an S model and a 57, it looked sportier and slightly more owner - driver. My only Maybach experience, but it made a huge impression and led to me persuading a friend to buy the discount version , a 20,000 mile 1992 600SEL, a few years later, which he still has.

Which would be a technically better car but much less interesting and for those in the know, much less impressive, assuming the Maybach in question has been maintained without regard to expense. It’s the modern day 600 Grosser, whereas a 60k nearly new S Class is an upmarket airport limo. I do agree that a Maybach in anything other than 100% perfect condition would look depressing , they have to be perfect to carry off the head of state / billionaire look.

If you're implying rappers don't talk about Maybach's you couldn't be more wrong
Indeed - Florida rapper Rick Ross actually named his production company Maybach Music Group (or MMG) and liberally sprinkles the vocal tag "Maybach Music..." on everything he features on; that's before we even talk about the songs he made called "Maybach Music" as well as "Maybach Music part 2" and "Maybach Music part 3"...

I think it's fair to say that to Americans at least, Maybach as a brand is far more recognised, at least within hiphop culture, than Rolls Royce!
Okay, great.

That and the lack of brand awareness. I always got the impression they designed this car from the inside-out, yet the outside lacks any sort of elegance. Big cars have the space to show elegance, and luxury cars should be elegant

Guy I know added a couple to his large fleet of Mercedes chauffer cars but his had white leather and looked so much better than the example in the ad. He still got rid fairly soon as they're so much over the top compared with the relatively discreet S class and not many of his customers wanted to be seen in one more than once. As luxurious as a roller for the passengers but not particularly good to drive so pointless for any well heeled enthusiast who could forgive the Ssangyong styling.

Disagree.

600 Grosser a classic, Maybach 62 an overpriced, tired, outdated £60k turd,

I've actually been in one when they came out - A friend of mine had a number of top end Mercedes from new and was offered a test drive. He arranged to have it delivered to Luton airport. Funnily enough we were just returning from a trip to the Geneva Motor Show and needed to get home in Leicestershire. I remember it being brilliantly comfortable in the back and way better than the Sleazy jet plane we had just got off and silent, but boy no escaping it looks dull and no amount of free champagne and Charbonnel chocolates would persuade him to buy, settling for another SL. Still a great way to get home for free!

As above.
Because of course, Yanks have such taste, evinced by the 80’s-redolent pastel green and pink interiors still being offered as de-riqeur in Florida properties....
If the interior of the Maybach was a kitchen it wouldn’t be Möben, it would be B&Q.

There's a glaring error in the article. The Maybach was not based on the W220 at all, it was based on the larger W140 chassis .
