Isn't that more a problem with BMW's engineering?

As posted earlier, manufacturers like Mazda have a system where no additional components are needed and the battery isn't used to re-start the engine
According to the linked web page in the earlier post, Mazda's system still uses the starter motor to assist the engine start.

Yeah, the text says it doesn't use the starter motor but the diagram seems to show that it does. My wife has a CX3 and it seems to use the starter motor, although it's very quick to start. Maybe the starter motor is just to add a bit more oomph to that charged cylinder which gets lit up? Hence the no beefed up starter motor they talk about.

But about the i-stop, my wife turns it off. Yet the display helpfully tells you how much petrol got saved and how much further you've gotten on the same amount of fuel. So it seems like it's a slightly inexact science.

On my iQ, in the 2000 miles ive owned the car for, the engine has been off for 4 and a half hours when it would otherwise have been idling.
Quite remarkable really.
On my 20-30 minute commute i usually clock up 4 minutes of "off" when id otherwise be idling.
