Interior is very poor for the money. Bimmer are pretty poor in that dept. An S63 coupe has a more charismatic engine, must nicer interior and better ride.

I'm struggling to see what this does that the 6 Series GC doesn't do for less money.

Seems pointless to me!
With you on that...

Another BMW that's a complete visual mess. If they can even mess up a big GT coupé, there really is no hope left.

Seriously...BMW need some new designers!! The front and side profile I like, the rear end is a total disaster.. over styled..

Happy in principle to see an 8 series back for BMW but oh dear, what a mess they've made of it frown
Genuine question to all those who HATE it, think it's ugly etc.... I get that not all cars are universally appealing, and this might not hit the spot, but for this to be genuinely ugly as sin....what current car is at the other end of the beauty scale?

I think BMW have been over styling their cars for a good few years.

This to me appears tinny, or KIA/Hyundai-esque. It looks..."cheap" in the sense that no matter what size wheels are put on it the body will appear oversized like many a Japanese 80s car of yore.

Meanwhile, on a positive note, there's a wheel designer somewhere in BMW who knows exactly what they're doing.
For a standard OEM wheel, that design (colour aside - should be flat grey or silver) is stunningly simple and effective.

As Ares says, what car is absolutely beautiful if this is ugly as sin? People here are acting like it's as appealing to look at as a PT Cruiser!

I understand it's different strokes for different folks and all that, but how on god's green earth does it resemble a Hyundai even in the slightest? If you think that, you need glasses! rotate

You're right, it's not the worst looking car by any stretch of the imagination but I still think the rear looks like similar to Hyundai's OTT bumper!

I don't see it personally but everyone's different. Only thing that annoys me a little is the badge placement (the xdrive and m850i badges) but BMW have always been a bit naff with that on other models.

I must be in the very sparsely populated camp of people who love it, which does surprise me because i thought this model would go down overall as a good looker.

They should've just stuck with calling it the 6 series for me. I'm looking forward to seeing one up close and personal.
It's a good marketing ploy. BMW can ask more money for an 8 than a 6 and, now that the original is seen as a modern classic it can evoke the memory of the old one. A good move from BMW...

..only they've completely bksed it up! Whereas the original was bold and unique (for a BMW) this one appears to have all the fussy styling nonsense that's plagued car design from the past 5 years.

Mercedes S Class coupe. Although I think it’s more expensive. 911 maybe - probably similar room in the back! And LC coupe - even with the cheese grater grille it’s a better looking car.

Bentley Conti and DB11 way more money so not really rivals.

So its the new 6 Series.

At 5cm shorter than current 6, it's not a bigger GT so calling it an 8 series surely is only to justify the £100k price tag instead of however much a normal 6er costs.

Come on BMW, you can do better. A smaller 6 series with alcantara on the A pillars is not an 8 series.
640d started at 70 grand in 2012, I don’t think there were big discounts then, you could easily have specced one to 90 odd grand, adjusted to inflation, I don’t think 100 grand is that bad, this may as well be an M car, sub 4 0-60, 530 bhp with everything you need inside it, it’s a striking design and a flagship model.

On the face of it, 100 grand is a lot of money but when you look at alternatives, it doesn’t look that expensive. I doubt the AMG GT 4 doors are going to start at 50 and the new GTS Panamera starts at 100 as well I think with less power.

In my village, everywhere I look, I see brand new Range Rovers, every single one of them probably nudge 100 grand in list price and I don’t see a shortage of them, why should there be a shortage of these? 2 seats right, well....say you earn 100k a year after tax, you take home 8 grand a month, I can imagine these being around 800-1200 a month to PCP and that’s nothing to a salary like that, given you already have a house, your wife works.

No need to be the other end. There are far more attractive "normal" cars. Mazda 6, Volvo V90, Vauxhall Insignia even, are all more cohesive designs IMHO.

BMW appear to have lost their way of late. To these eyes, at least.

Hmmm. Cover up the grille and badges and this could easily pass for a Mercedes. Seems BMW's stylists have got bored of making all their own cars look the same and now want to make them all look the same as another German manufacturer's line up of identical looking cars.

Hard to get excited about this; like a few others here I'd rather join the queue for a 6 GC.

And to answer Ares, it's not the ugliest car on the road, but the car at the right end of the beauty scale is the DB11 Volante. That'll be just ahead of the DBS Superleggera Volante, judging by recent photos.

From BMW's website

Now, that's obviously for the diesel but I suspect, even now, that will still make up the bulk of the sales.
