My 500 has a 5.5. Although if you buy the same car in the US it's a 550. Eh?
It used to be called the 500 but after 2006 and the increase in size it was a 550.

I had the W211 facelift which was after the debacle of the rust issues (and suspension problems, SBS pump?) and it was faultless.

It had near on 400k miles on it when I sold it. Great car.

Had a W212 for a week and hated it. It seemed like MB had returned to their penny pinching ways.

I’d go for the older C or E with the bulletproof in-line 6 104 engine.

What me and my brother did, CLK430 rust bucket, ran it for a few months and sold it (at a profit surprisingly).

Any idea what those wheels are? They'd look alright on my w220.

Only thing I know is that they’re Carlsson wheels, or replicas, they are nice!

Which is why some dolt has stuck an AMG badge on it's boot lid...

My godfather had one of these, elderly retired bank manager, had it fully sped'd from new, and adhered to the servicing (in fact, had it serviced more often than necessary) and corrosion inspection without fail at the supplying MB dealer.

Surprise surprise, the tin worm appeared and MB gave him the bums rush. He pointed out that they had inspected it every year for corrosion and they just weren't interested (despite it corroding from the inside out, or outside in, whichever was supposed to be covered.

Bless him, he went to the nearby Toyota dealer and bought an Avensis D4D auto, as it is to be his last car before giving up driving (and he was prepared to spend serious wedge on his last MB).

Whilst waiting for the Toyota to be built he drove around were he lives in North London with a big home-made sign in his Merc telling people to avoid the marque.

stty attitude and they lost a £50k+ sale (and yes, its a big difference between a Toybota and a Merc...)

There's a silver E55 AMG i see in my local Tesco on a weekly basis and there's no evidence of rust at all; do or did owners keep these better or is it because an increasing number seem to be being imported from the salt-free roads of Japan?
My dad gave up driving about 5-6 years ago, E240 W210 sat ever since on my drive, about 50,000 miles IIRC not a spot of rust and everything works. I’m suprised to say the least.....

They look rather large, or is it just the angle?

FIL had the balance issue on the V6 Merc he brought recently (2008 model I think). Was warned trouble starts at 60k miles and this proved accurate. £4k bill at main dealers to fix.
Is this bimetallic balance thing on the 3.2 litre V6?
Possibly not, but the engine did suffer from a balance shaft and chain/tensioner issue. A well documented issue (he found out *after* purchasing it) and in the States a class-action lawsuit forced Mercedes to repair affected cars for free as it was down to sub-standard materials & manufacturing.

No such luck in the UK unsurprisingly. The dealer he bought it from paid half as the issue kicked in just weeks after buying the car.
Completely different engines and problems. The issue with the M112 and M113 engines in the W210s was the harmonic balancer/front crank pulley falling apart. I've seen them bad enough that it's allowed the steel portion of the pulley to walk backwards and eat it's way in to the timing cover.

The problem described above on the 2008 version was due to premature wear of the teeth on the balancer shaft sprockets of the M272 V6s, as fitted to the later W211 E Class and W209 CLK models (amongst others). It allows the cam timing to move and although the VVT system can adjust itself and compensate to where it needs to be, the engine ECU notes that all is not well so pings the engine light on the dash. If left ignored though eventually the sprocket could wear enough to allow the chain to slip or jump altogether. I changed plenty when I was a Merc tech.

  • Edited to add that I'm one of the minority who loves the W210. I've had a few over the years and am seriously considering another E55 AMG version, albeit a Jap import so there are no tinworm issues. I think the facelifted E55 is such a good looking car.

I run a w210 E430 Elegance which I picked up 18 months ago for little more than shed money. It is a great car, especially for covering long distances against a deadline. It is buttery smooth, plenty fast enough, comfortable, capable, refined, easy to operate and invisible to police cars. It has been completely reliable. It is starting to rust. We have really come to like it and respect it. The m113 engine is very reliable and does not seem to suffer the disintegrating crankshaft balancer problem that affected very early m112 engines in America. I did have the balancer changed on my r129 and it cost less than £200; it would be a DIY job for anyone with a long spanner. Personally, I do not find it a characterless motor; it is simply discreet and subtle unlike the blaring, monotonous, in-yer-face V8 faux-character that seems to be obligatory these days. Mine also gives 25mpg and 400 miles off a tank in hard use.

Here is my thread: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

These are good cars for anyone who seeks something discreet, comfortable, fast and cheap. But I would avoid the rustiest and anything Barry'd up like this one is. I cannot be alone in regarding anything AMG as this decade's Burberry cap?

Much better:
