F06 Grand Coupe 640d
Discussion
I just picked up a 2012 640d coupe, big, high quality interior, looks smart, great on fuel and very comfortable even on the 20 in wheels. 8 speed auto is smooth, power is more than enough, sport mode makes it feels a lot quicker too. Previous motor was the earlier 635d which did drive more sporty and felt heavier and better built, but the cabin in the newer model is a lot more modern and nicer to be in for long journeys. Seem decent value at the moment

My local dealer recently had a Pre Reg (June 2018) 640D Gran Coupe with delivery miles. List was £74,000 - available for £39,500.
That is amazing value if you want that kind of car. They even had a choice of colours - blue or black.

These cars are not too common the road, saw one today and as said not only are they a big car they have huge road presence

In recent months the residual value of these cars is dropping like a stone.
I understand that there is a new 6 series on the way, but I have never seen used values weaken like this.
Is this model a good buy, or will the values continue to drop or will they eventually level out?
The replacement 6 series is the already out 6GT (a refreshed 5GT) there is no "direct" replacement of the outgoing 6. I understand that there is a new 6 series on the way, but I have never seen used values weaken like this.

I believe from sources that production has actually ended.
In relation to 6 prices, completely ignore list price and instead work on the viewpoint that for a 640D that an owner would have got around 20% - 25% discount off list. Mine was a list of £77k, after 2k it was suddenly only worth £47k. Doubt it somehow...
The reality of the matter is that many owners would have had a figure for the car around mid to late 40's to early 50's. Exactly around where the dealers price AUC stock (if not cheaper to get them shifted as it is an "old" model).
It did leave some owners in a difficult spot as they were possibly considering F10/11 535D but the spec at base was better on a 6.
Mine reached its 3rd birthday in September, I did take the extended warranty out as nothing out there interests me.
As others have said though the GC is longer than the current standard Range Rover and many other SUV's. So be aware! But saying that I do find mine can be hustled nicely in a "barge GT" way and in someways I actually find it more "fun" than my MX5 I had as you tend to drive slightly slower because of the weight and size. Before slotting it back in comfort....

Not surprising dealers were desperate to get rid of the stock when I popped in late Summer mine had two in, I know another forum user elsewhere actually bought one of them and managed £4k off even the price they had up.
But well done I like the blue they did for the final MY only.
Keep an eye on the usual issues and it should serve you well (mainly the yellow grommet, EGR Cooler and timing chain components IMO).

I'm a serial car changer....yet have had my 640d GC for a record three years....6 months was my norm
Superb car in every respect...mine has a very hi spec including head up display/nappa leather and it's just too lovely to replace....drives so well.
I also had an M6 GC and the 640d is better as a daily driver in many respects.
Miles are high on mine and its worth buttons now but I've had 3 years of solid service so am tempted to keep until it breaks !!

Shocks me how much these drop!
Epic looking car - still one of the best looking cars on the road, excellent interior and excellent engine.
I know BMW give huge discounts on new but even as a used 3 year old buy the prices should be much firmer. No idea why they are not
I think the market in general for the UK is part of the problem for the GC it is on the large end of the saloon spectrum and therefore not really as in "demand" as the love of SUV's and as said it does have issues in car parks.Epic looking car - still one of the best looking cars on the road, excellent interior and excellent engine.

Regarding retained value & depreciation it is around UK average, the issues at play though really unfortunately boil down to the fact that the 6 is a harder sell than some of the BMW range and less common.

Is there a new 6 coupe or GC on the way ? I haven't seen this anywhere. I thought the 8 made these redundant with the 6GT the only thing left.
I had a 6GC for just over 3 years. The only reason I got rid was to accommodate 2 young kids and their baggage. I loved the car and it was spec'd up well. As mentioned these were heavily discounted to start with iirc list was £75k, I bought for £50k exactly on a PCP of 1.9%apr, and traded for £28k? 3 yrs and 45k miles later.
The cars at £38k mark have a GFV of £16k after 4yrs so depreciation doesn't level out much.
At £38k these are excellent value for money though depreciation aside.

There is an 8GC coming though.
I think the GFV is a little on the low side in honesty, but they are superb cars overall even with the odd issue.
I like a few others cannot think of anything (at least in the current BMW line up) that interests me. That does include the 8 as well which in person whilst "nice" did not excite me in the same way as the 6 does. The only thing I did find was the seating position felt lower in the 8 which was nice, I equally don't like BMW's current love of shoving xdrive on just about everything.
This shape 6 and 6GC are just good value, nearly new and even used ones from about £12k. I couldn’t find much in the £12k-£15k bracket that was fairly quick, looked good/coupe, decent mpg, and a high quality cabin. My choices narrowed to the BMW’s, the Merc CLS 350cdi and the Audi A7. It’s then £20k plus for other luxury crusiers like the Panamera or the Maserati..
I’ll prob change my 2012 model for a slightly newer one late next year.

Amazing car. So sporty and fast to drive.
I’m used to 5L Jaguars and I’m really impressed.
Tech is amazing also.
Bargain!
