Am I the only one who thinks the 928 is shockingly ugly?

It may be a wonder to drive but god, what a minger...
Have to say I agree. We can't be alone, otherwise Porsche wouldn't have dropped it, and they would be mega money today.
I agree. Used to love them but they really aren't ageing well.

Owned one - an S4 auto, and ran it as my daily driver for 9 & 1/2 years. Fabulous long-distance car and a proper GT. I think the 911 lovers who disparage the 928 miss the point, it's a GT, not a sports car and if you like and need a grand tourer that is the entire point. I replaced a 964-generation 911 with it and for my needs at the time it was better.

Electrics - are high quality & I never had trouble - running it as a daily kept a lot of problems away - but that said these cars are now 30+ years old so aging brings other issues. A lot will depend on how the car has been stored/garaged over that time.

Well that’s nice. It’s my car!

A lot of time, money and thought has gone into it and the end result is a fairly unique 928.

Had it weighed and its 100kg lighter than a standard GT and almost identical weight to the genuine (and very expensive) Clubsport cars which is a happy coincidence.

Agree.
The 928 is my car of choice for blasts down to Grasse instead of same vintage 911.
Well maintained examples still feel rock solid with enough torque to also relax when the mood takes you.
Any electrical gremlins are usually due to an aged Bosch relay.
Swap them all out at £5 a pop. Simples.

Lovely, and seems pretty good value compared to what other Porsches of the period go for, plus, that care and attention its had is worth a lot, so many of these are now money pits in waiting, they were well made but are now 20 or 30 odd years old.

Porsche dropped it when a raft of new accountants were brought in.
It was over engineered compared to the 911 and Ferraris, with each 928 costing more to produce than the RRP.
928's were built to last, but after 61,000 units sold Porsche probably made the right call from a business perspective.

Interesting.
Every woman I know prefers the 928 over my 550 Maranello.
I don't necessarily agree with them but will take it biggrin

For a 30 yr old car that spent fair amount of its life as track special 100,000 miles before a rebuild superb.
According to the advert it's "done a few trackdays" . I doubt that adds up to a fair amount of it's life.

According to Wikipedia the 928 was far from the first front engined car with a trans axle, or the most powerful. it is about 18th on the list

First seen in 1898 on the De Dion Button.

Ferrari Daytona had one, as did the 275 and 330. As did the Pontiac Tempest of 1963.
.
And the 1972 Alfa Romeo Alfetta.

Indeed "there is no substitute"

So you can have the satisfaction of knowing at least one person picked up on that quotation.

As someone else has already noted lovely detail in the "period trimmed" bucket seats

I've always thought these look fantastic though maybe colour sensitive IMHO

Timeless design. It would still look great if launched now.

Gorgeous.

What a machine those 928s were. Seeing how good they still look, imagine how unreal must have looked to those of us remembering them in 1978....!! ….40 years ago!

This looks like an awesome well cared for example. I own a 928 GT and have done so for over 15 years, and can honestly say that these cars are wonderful to own an drive. I have driven a few 911 turbos of the same era, including the 911 SE turbo, but the 928, especially the manual models, are far more advanced.

Having owned a Twin Turbo 928, I know I will never own a vehicle so superbly overengineered. 10/10 Would bang again.
