According to Wikipedia the 928 was far from the first front engined car with a trans axle, or the most powerful. it is about 18th on the list

First seen in 1898 on the De Dion Button.

Ferrari Daytona had one, as did the 275 and 330. As did the Pontiac Tempest of 1963.
.
And the 1972 Alfa Romeo Alfetta.
One of the 924/944 books mentions Porsche benefited from being consultants in trying to sort out the gearchange linkage on the Alfetta?

Were fabliously expensive cars to own when they were new. Old men's cars because of that; rare beasts. The CS package never made any sense to me, even back then when I was too young to really understand the demographics this car was aiming at. And from what I remember most publications also didn't understand this car's philosophy, maybe even Porsche was a bit undecided. In retrospect the philosophically most coherent versions were the S and the S4.

I agree. Used to love them but they really aren't ageing well.
Interesting.
Every woman I know prefers the 928 over my 550 Maranello.
I don't necessarily agree with them but will take it biggrin
Not ageing well? I think they're hardly ageing at all, especially if you compare them to its 1978 contempories. I also prefer its looks to the 550 Maranello, your taste in women, I dare say, exceeds your taste in cars.

This may be sacrilege, but I'd have one of these over a 911. I think the design was ahead of its time and it still looks futuristic today.

Beautiful lines and curves. Compared with some of the dog's breakfasts which are sold today - Toyota CHRist that's ugly, Nissan Puke etc.

I think this has aged well. I wasn't that keen on the 928 shape when it came out but the older the design gets the more it appeals to me.

Is this car still for sale?

Thanks for all the positive comments. The car is still for sale....albeit this thread is making me wonder about selling!!

And the car that was the inspiration for it, Derek Bell's car.

As you can see, quite similar in looks.

I owned 2 928's many years ago...………

A Mako blue 1980 S manual and a silver 88 S4 Sport, I'd love to know where it is now! It was the rarest 928 ever in the UK with, I believe 27 being sold and this one the only silver one. A dealer in London recently had one for sale at £60,000 in silver with less miles than mine when I had it had mine so if it was indeed my old one...………….. Anyway, I enquired about it and told them about mine, suspiciously they would not give me the registration of their car!?!?!?

Could have been mine. Mine was JJI6514 and had 77k on it
That plate is on a red Audi now...

Always fancied a GTS model of these one day but as with anything interesting from that period, prices have skyrocketed to a point where they don't really make financial sense if it's a car you want to actually drive.

That car in the article looks and sounds fantastic so well done to the owner.

Spot on. It looks far more modern than a Panamera, which I guess is the current equivalent.

For me, the best looking car Porsche have ever made.

I've just pulled mine out of storage. It needs some re-commissioning but it's all there. Mine has an extensive service history with over £25k in the folder! I bought her on here ten years ago and they really do get under your skin. It's a genuine GT too.

I just can't bear to part with it but I will have to choose between the XJS or this.. I said that this last year and nothing has changed so I guess I'll be keeping her. Insurance is £78 a year which is another reason not to sell. This is my 3rd 928.

Ooo, that's tough. A proper car built like a brick outhouse to the highest standards by workers that cared and over engineered, that will not break down and is a joy to drive.....or an XJS. rofl

wink It's my third XJS and as much as they have their flaws, behind the wheel is a nice place to be. This is the one of very last 1996 V12, 6.0 Litre Celebrations.

Was the 1980 S Manual paint colour actually called "Mako Blue"? That was the name chosen in a competition for the launch colour of the Aston Martin Vantage V12. So would be interested to know if Porsche got there first!

330bhp, lightened and a manual 5-speed - do these actually go as well as the figures imply? Those figures suggest a very quick car even today, but I'm not so sure of the reality...

Having owned a 928 GTS, I can’t even imagine how fast a twin turbo one would be.

Great cars, though. Solid, perfectly balanced and ludicrously fast.

Its quick and has plenty of torque and picks up very quickly. Its not like an S4 auto at all. Its a very different beast. You really have to drive it and hear it to appreciate it. The videos and photos only convey so much. It really belies its weight.
