My apologies, previous one then - i.e. the 640i / 640d coupe and convertible.
New car looks like evolved version of old car...shock. rolleyes

Rear styling seems at odds with the rest of it, but in general looks heavy - perhaps due to the bland, tall sides and long front overhang for a RWD car?
The grille seems way to big and crass.
Plus, i cant see what it really does over a 4 series and I doubt its much bigger on the inside.

Couple that with horrendous depreciation and suspect reliability in years to come with the tech laden spec, it doesnt appeal much!

Shame, im finding BMWs less appealing by the year and I'm a "fanboy".
It does the same over a 4-series as the 5-series does over a 3-series, the 7-series does over a 5-series. The X5 does over an X3, the X3 over the X1, the X4 over the X2, the X6 over the X4.... etc etc.

....in other words, bigger cars do what smaller cars do, just a bit bigger.

I suspect this might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm not really a fan of Alpina.

They take a BMW, put some ugly badges on it, some 400 spoke alloy wheels, and make it not quite as fast as one that BMW will sell you.
You've never driven one then. wink

Is this the same 4.4 twin turbo as found in the now deleted 650i? If so they look pretty good value at £20-£30k....

You seem like you just want an argument for the sake of it?!

This new 8 is in no way an evolved version of the original 8 Series, more so an evolution of the previous 6 Series.

When the E31 came out, it was revolutionary and different, which this new 8 isn't!

All personal opinion, so please don't take it to heart...

Isn't that exactly what he is saying? I don't think anyone expected this car to be anything other than a direct replacement for the old 6-series coupe. Who gives a damn what badge they put on it, that has no bearing on how good it is or isn't as a car.

That's what I was under the impression Ares was saying.

Well in that case you know it is significantly more than just ugly badges, 400 spoke alloy wheels and not quite as fast as it's competing BMW....and are just seeking to be salacious and/or disingenuous.

It's a world first: a convertible that looks better with the roof up!

(My God, it's ugly. Which is a shame, because there's some nice detailing like the curved and not-curved corners where the aluminium trim runs around the start button.)

Really dont understand why manufacturers have started using some of the worst colours possible to show off new models.

I have to agree.. I love my E31 8 series and it still seems special when I'm out in it,in fact more so than the i8 or the 640..

I'm a fan of the old 8 series and we can sing its praises until the cows come home, although fact is it wasn't actually that good, the Mercedes rival was a better car and the 8 series sales figures show it was an utter flop.

It's all well and good saying it's a characterful car which was revolutionary 30 years after the fact, but if it wasn't actually very good at the time for its price and vs its rivals.... It ain't worth the manufacturer doing!

Ohh, that back end is really not good, it looks like every member of the design team was allowed to get one of their ideas implemented, in the name of inclusivity and diversity.
Everybody gets a trophy!
This is supposed to be top of the line design nowadays? It looks embarassing!

I think on the most part it looks fine, better as convertible imo. Still think there are too many fussy creases, exhaust trims are too big and that center console is a mess, that gear stick though vomit

They don't appear to offer much more than that, or what I've already mentioned.

I did expect it would be an unpopular opinion, I suppose I should also have expected I'd be told I was plain wrong. laugh
Without pushing the point - if there doesn't appear to be much else to distinguish an Alpina from it's BMW stablemate, then if you have driven one, you must have turned most of your senses off.

You may not like them, but an Alpina is more about substance than it is about style.

I would say thats different, the saloons and 4x4s are bigger inside, the bigger the coupe generally not much interior space/fun/looks gain but with more depreciation, fuel, tech and servicing costs. (Subjective).
