Is Pistonheads seriously encouraging people to buy this rust bucket?

MOT record of the MK2.5 in 2016

Reason(s) for failure
Nearside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c) Dangerous
Offside Front Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c) Dangerous
Nearside Front Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion which adversely affects braking or steering (6.1.A.1)
Offside Front Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion which adversely affects braking or steering (6.1.A.1)
Nearside Rear Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded outer sill (5.2.6)
Offside Rear Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded outer sill (5.2.6)
Registration plate lamp not working (1.1.C.1d)

Today it looks like it was fixed by slapping some filler on the top and painted over with a roller.

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, it won't survive the winter.

I can't fathom why people are incapable of turning their phone by 90 degrees so they can take a decent picture.

Can't say either appeal to me to be honest. I drove one several years ago, but most of them seem to be sheds these days. Unless you MUST have RWD, I think there are much better cars out there for the money. I'd take a ropey Clio 172 over one of these all day long.

I had a Mk2 until recently and enjoyed it very much. Lovely ride and safe RWD handling, but they do feel a bit wobbly when pushing on. A great fun car however to hoon around in and probably the most fun car I have ever owned.

Anyway, I have to concur about the rust. I owned mine for 2 and a half years. On both MOTs, it needed welding and was going to need a heap more this year. Fortunately I was lucky enough to find a buyer who was able to do all her own welding and wasn't put off by it. I had a massive service history and the sills had been done twice before at some cost. It really does put you off owning these, which is a shame as the mechanicals are pretty bombproof and the electrics wont give you any bother.

£1500 puts you in a 330d with a manual box (even though the auto suits it better) it also puts you in a manual 330i. According to the owners club, they'll have low miles and FSH to go with them, that's a much more appealing prospect over the winter than two ruined convertibles.

The seller has got his wires crossed. When tax-free exemption was introduced in the mid 1990s, it was for 25 year old cars. Gordon Brown froze it in 1998 for cars registered before 1973.

Wen it was unfrozen by Osborne 2013, these cars were now 40 years old. So it became all 40 year old cars on a rolling basis, i.e. 1978 cars will become tax free in April 2019.

The seller somehow thinks (or misleads?) that a '94 MX5 will be tax free next year.
It'd be tax free if I had it, as it would wear slicks and never, ever see the road again. smile

Because people, including you continue to return to the site. I believe that's how websites work.

Because page views = inventory = ad revenue.

And CONGTRATULATIONS!!! woohoo because you, yes YOU!, have probably generated another ten page views simply by going to the PH homepage > clicking on the Shed article > reading the forum comments > writing your own inane comment > posting your own inane comment > going back to forum to read your inane comment whilst congratulate yourself on your biting satire and commercial acumen.

Don't come here if you don't like it, because

A note on roll bars for anybody looking - GC Fabrications make excellent bars and they are, for my money, better than TR Lane items. Well worth a look (owned by a nice bloke too).

I had a ball in my Mk.1 MX5, but did find it underpowered. If I got stuck behind slower traffic it was a nightmare to pass it.

There's a difference between really good pictures and just having the whole car in the frame.

You can also put a cheap "personal" number plate on that and remove all doubt that you're a complete knob.

Oooh, making me feel bad about the one I put on my Volvo. I only got it as a reward for her being such a good car....

Oh, what a funny, intelligent and well thought out comment smile Because everyone who choses to buy a well balanced car is of course "a complete knob". Thank you Rumblestripe, I made the grave error of suggesting something different for the same money as these two rotten convertibles. I certainly wouldn't dare suggest that you chose the comfortable, well balanced, refined RWD saloon over the much superior in every single aspect MX5. We all know that the people who drive a rusty MX5 through winter are absolute elites, doctors, Michelin star chefs, Nobel Peace Prize winners. May I be lynched for suggesting someone buys a 3 Series, I only hope I can someday reach your intelligence level "Rumblestripe".

Excluding the sarcasm, I'd rather be a comfy knob than be seen driving one of those st heaps through winter. If they don't crumble away by then.

I really want to like MX5's but I cannot get comfortable in them. I'm not overly tall at 6ft but have long arms and legs which seems to be the perfect recipe for not finding a good driving position. Mrs Ballans has a 2003 MX5 and I take it for an occasional spin but it frustrates me as I just do not fit. I can liken it to those trendy fitted shirts that look great on 'fit' blokes. When I try one I just bulge out in all the wrong places and feel awkward.

I'll be amazed if Mrs B's makes it through another MOT without major rust remediation but it still looks better than this bodgtastic red one!

PS - Excellent effort on the poetry earlier, don't usually get that treat on Shed of the Week.
PPS - How on earth did I mange to compare trendy shirts with an MX5??

Most cheap e46s are rot boxes as well. Viewed a few 330is with a friend recently, manual gearboxes were slack and awful to use. Comically wobbling away on idle.

Those two mx5s do look like st boxes though.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that the blue one is a complete dog without even having seen it in the flesh. Not bothering to clean it for a sale advert and taking interior shots with both footwells full of old receipts and other tat is a sure sign that the owner hasn't given a fk about maintaining or looking after the car.
