Isn't this the car the Senna should have been from the outset? I thought the brief from Senna was the ultimate expression of what McLaren knew about race cars? It does dilute the series a little if we now get this GTR version. Nothing worse than when a manufacturer launches a car and then seemingly keeps tweaks/improvements back so they can then launch an x-rated version 6-months later.

They would have done better by launching the car and offering owners the chance to upgrade their existing car if the engineers found developments later in the model life. Would make each owner feel like they were part of a special factory development programme that way improving residuals and retaining exclusivity.
It’s exactly as Mclarens said they would do... a road legal track car followed by a full on track only car.
Mclaren never claimed they would be thee fastest track cars... just the fastest Mclarens they’ve made so all this thing about track times is irrelevant... besides how many owners would trouble any time quoted. Clearly the customers don’t care.

Too many models, too quickly. The Senna was a dog with a god awful name, and then this appears before you've a second to digest it.

With the same basic drivetrain used across the range, the whole thing has a hint of the unexotic. It devalues their cars in my eyes. Glad they're selling cars.

Could you point to a source for your claim that the Senna was/is a dog? Or do you actually mean "I don't like the way the Senna looks"?

And too many models? No more than the endless stream of new 911 variants. McLaren have sold out of these at over £1m a pop, and 106 Speedtails at twice that. It appears the market wants all of these models and that people who can afford them aren't too bothered about shared engine architecture.

I wonder how many of them will ever see a track. These things are barely cars, they're just lumps of investment opportunity on wheels.

You do see a fair few P1GTRs, FXXK etc things on Mclaren/Ferrari own trackdays. No reason why the Senna GTR would be any different.

Agree, things like the F1, F40 even veyron we’re genuinely special cars which probably weren’t conceived as investments.

Worlds gone a bit mad, there are so many “special edition” cars now that they’re not really that special, not backed by heritage or uniqueness of concept imho.

It’ll carry on for as long as interest rates remain low and cars are a better investment that traditional instruments, maybe that’ll be forever but I’m not convinced.

720S on the other hand, absolute masterpiece. I’d have one in a heartbeat if I could afford to spend £200k and not miss it.

I'm pretty sure which ever Billionaire buys this to have the latest toy, will fully enjoy his/her experience. No doubt with McLaren corporate at every track day it's allowed to go on. But will your average Billionaire even get anywhere near this cars limits or capabilities? Probably not.

So not doubt, it'll be seen at a few events, maybe even driven a couple times. Once said Billionaire realises they can't actually drive it, it'll be taken back to their private and very exclusive garage. No doubt parked between their previously purchased Senna, and one of Ferraris FXX models.

While I love McLaren for their Sports and supersports series cars (even if they do look all the same) and personally would love a 570S sat in my garage, I just don't see the point in the Senna, GT-R, other than just a way to extract even more money from said Billionaires.

And as for the design of the Speedtail? God it's ugly.

What they are doing is not in any way connected with my interests, so good luck to them, I hope they continue to do good business.

But I will say that the Blenheim Palace supercar show was awash with McLarens which I found to be terminally ugly to the point of being crass, particularly as regards colours and finish patterns, even if it is claimed they are only interested in performance.

I would also say that I guessed most of their owners didn't have absolute performance uppermost in their minds either........

I just laughed when I saw this for all the reasons given above! Some very funny comments btw! I love McLaren but I am getting a bit bored of the same basic car being shovelled out in slightly different formats depending on the day of the week.
Porsche would never let this happen with the 911
You what? I take it your joking as Porsche are the worse for this with derivatives of the same car. You can have the 911 in 23 different versions:

Carrera, S, Cabriolet and Cabriolet S
Carrera 4, S, Cabriolet and Cabriolet S
Carrera T
Targa 4, S
Turbo, S, Cabriolet and Cabriolet S
Carrera GTS and GTS Cabriolet
Carrera 4 GTS and GTS Cabriolet
Targa 4 GTS
GT3
GT3 RS
GT2 RS

For you to think that 2 versions of the McLaren Senna is too much your insane.

Whoosh Parrot for one please biggrin

TBH McLaren know their target market for their current offerings, it's why they are always sycophantly tagging that (100% pure) helmet "MrJWW" in everything and getting him to present their media events.

You'll notice of course all this nonsense never happened when Ron was in charge!

This is the car they said they would make when they launched the road-going Senna. This isn't a new launch 6 months later, it's just a new press release about the GTR track-only version which was shown at the Senna launch, and which was on the show stand in Geneva in March and at the Goodwood FoS earlier in the summer. Maybe some people didn't know about the GTR version, but anybody buying a Senna certainly would.

I don't understand your "Whoosh Parrot for one please biggrin" comment so I will ignore it.

As for the Ron Dennis thing I couldn't agree more as my favourite car of all time is the McLaren F1 and I have huge collection of Models and memorabilia. I do see why they are doing it as they need cash to develop the standard models but I just wish they would bring new super special model out once a year.

Rear wing needs to be bigger, like the sketch. Not a fan of the diffuser or length of front splitter, but this isnt about looks.

At this rate of progress, i expect Mclaren to make an anti gravity flying hover car in the next 10 years.
