I'd rather pay more and have a GTi or failing that, the Polo R-Line which shares the same engine and 'box i believe.

Or you could get a Fiesta Zetec S/ST Line 140. The 1.0 Ecooboost is a nicer enginem

For the money you could have a 66 plate Octavia or Leon on sub 20k miles ... Both are nicer in every aspect you can think of.
Spectacular!

For the money you could have 2011 Jaguar XF 3.0d V6.

Hmmm, I've been contemplating this situation. Our Club Up is an absolute hoot on the backroads, but it's 74bhp and wafer thin torque output let the side down a bit. Revo do a remap that will get 130+ out of the 90bhp TSi Up engine and a few ancillary mods will get it to over 140bhp. A set of Tarrox discs and pads and some Goodridge brake hoses to get it to stop properly and I think you have something a bit quicker than the Up GTi for a lot less money.

I'm not sure there's much wrong with the standard suspension set up that a 15mm drop will improve. I'd probably put some money into decent tyres and not bother messing around with the suspension.

Less than 100bhp and 10k, surely there are better cheaper alternatives to this.

Interesting article but I cannot get past ‘this has gotten me thinking’.
Is gotten a word? and wouldn’t ‘got’ been ok in this situation?
Not just me then…
Gotten is most definitely a word, and not just in America.

For me, the 5 speed box isn't an issue as the extra torque of the tuned Tsi engine will pull the higher ratios. Early days, but VW engine appears more reliable than Ford's chocolate 3 pot. Add in the fun factor of overtaking an Up! Gti in an OAP spec Up! - win win.

Only in America. And since we are not in America, I don't think it should be used here.

There might be something wrong with me...but this is what i think (and i dont think i'm the first to say this but i can't remeber who esle said it).

I've NOT driven the GTi but i have driven the 90PS TSi High Up and also the 75 and 60PS 'normal' ups.

In my overall opinion - in terms of 'fun' the slower ones are definitely better!

You have to work them harder...and yes they aren't fast...but you feel like 'you get out of them what you put into them'.

I found the 90PS TSi version obviously much faster...but with the turbo nature and the veeeeeeeery long gearing....to me...if felt like...dare i say it....a bit of a diesel or 'GT' car.

It felt....aloof. Yes you were going faster and it was pretty flexible....but that was the thing...it encouranged a more lazy way of driving...and there was a bit of a lack of engagement (IMO).

IF the GTI is the same as the 90PS...then i'd be disappointed with it. Yes, the GTI looks great...but i'd hope there was more to it than that.

The 90PS felt like a very worthy commuter car, refined and long legged....but like...it didn't involve. It was 'above' that kind of driving...and was more of a faster cruiser.

Whereas the N/A ones encouraged a different kind of driving, very good fun, snickety box etc, really good.

I'm not saying if i had the choice that i wouldn't take the TSi....'cos it's a great all rounder....but......

I had an ecoboost red edition fiesta with a superchips map running 170bhp all day long with no other supporting mods except an airfilter.

One of the best cars I have ever owned, the standard brakes with updated pads were more than up to the job as its not extreme power.

As for warranty, just remove the map with the bluefin device, job done

I looked at an UP GTI.

Ended up with a mk2 Swift Sport. Cracking little car.

I suspect there are a lot more Ford triples out there than the VW one.

Toyota IQ with the 1.3 litre engine has 97hp naturally aspirated and weighs about 850kg with 6-speed manual gearbox, 2nd hand they are going for £5k or so.

Official figures are slow but Toyota do that for insurance purposes, I think to make them a realistic prospect for new drivers, much like Vauxhall do.

0-60 takes about 8.5 seconds. Apparently the gearbox is pants though.

This. There are a score of older hot hatches I'd take over this. The Up doesn't truly represent budget motoring in my view, or much imagination.

Had a standard Up for a second car a couple of years back. Approved used from VW, low miles, started getting rumbling from brakes pretty quickly only after gentle driving. Turns out it’s a common problem, front discs warp and replacing them doesn’t necessarily fix it, something to do with the hubs. There’s plenty of info online from angry owners.
Got them replaced free, same thing happened within a couple of thousand miles. PX’d the car. Never would buy another for that reason and for the terrible steering which hardly seemed to self centre it was so over assisted. Oh and that screen stuck on the dash, just ended up leaving it out and plugging my phone in via the normal head unit. Not VW’s finest hour as a design. I should point out I’ve owned other VAG group cars, all of which I’ve liked or loved and had no issues with.

Within wishing to derail the thread (again), not "only in America". It's an English word and in use over here too.
