Much as I admire the Land Cruiser, there's one thing I don't get about the utility in particular:

If your business requires a rugged, very off-road capable vehicle that can seat 5 and you want it to be a Toyota, why would you pick one over a double-cab Hilux? Truck's cheaper than even the LC Utility Commercial, tows more, and will presumably go everywhere the LC can, too.

I love the G-Wagon. But, the Toyota. Whilst based in Russia, the CEO ordered a new RR. It lasted about 8 weeks before various faults. It went in and out of the dealer until he got rid of it. This guy can afford pretty much anything, but he has a Land Cruiser. I asked him why. he said 'It's the only cat built to withstand Russia'. Similarly my BIL is in Perth. They love the Toyota out there. It's only here in the UK, where we never actually test the cars that the school run demands the latest Velar and the like.

What's happened to the styling of the Land Cruiser? It's never been a particularly stunning shape, but now it just looks like a Rav 4 XXL and all the more awkward for it.

Thank feck for steel wheels so that some jonny buying a Range Rover with 20 inch ones cannot shout at me for not moving over because he had to go up a kerb and "I have £500 wheels on". Irony lost.

Both these cars are, with the Jimny and Jeep, still pushing on proper 4x4 at all ends of the spectrum in a world full of crossdressers. Or whatever the term is. Unders, overs, inbetweeners

Having said that, as a man who loves his google streetmap

take your pick!

You're only as good as your imagination and your tyres.

What so you think this is after doing a zoom in?

I've driven down that road in an old volvo 360 - the sahara proper doesn't get going for a couple of hundred more miles (more mauritania than western sahara), but that's crossable too..

there was a fair bit of this going on though..

those mercs are pretty commonplace around there, none of the locals have the cash for a 4wd

Furthermore the UK model gets an utterly puny 4 cylinder wheezy engine. If I look up the latest Land Cruiser on Wikipedia a whole raft of 6 and 8 cylinder petrol and diesel engines are listed, with no mention of this 4 cylinder unit.

The toyota has it hands down for me.you by it for it's utility, the G-wagon has lost it's utility. I'm sure many people that probably thought at the idea of doing an around the world trip would now opt for the toyota instead of the G-wagon. this g wagon is more of a chelsea tractor has others have said. i hat ethe wheels nad hate the DRLs on it.

I used to love the G-Wagen, especially the 2 door convertible version back in the day.
The bank vault looks are confidence inspiring, and the narrow width is a nice reminder of how bloated contemporary designs have become.
However I cannot help thinking that in the meantime it is a bit retarded, especially in AMG trim with 21” wheels. The price is a joke! Just another way to show off that you only care about image.
The Land Cruiser any day!
The G63 is 1984mm wide, while the Land Cruiser is 1885mm wide. The G-Wagen is, and always has been, quite big.
The previous 463 wasn’t a wide car, it’s very narrow compared to a FFRR. Very noticeable both sitting inside it and driving through tight lanes.

Can anyone clear up the Germanic obsession with obfuscation please?
Why is a G63 now a 4.0 when it was previously a 5.5 and a G65 was a 6.0?
I suppose a clue would be in the E63 having been a 6.2...? But no difference, I’m sure I’ll be told, to BMW with their 323 which was a 2.5 etc etc
Other than that, I wouldn’t spunk £stupid money on the Mercedes but neither would I buy a Toybota that looks like a clowns shoe in profile.
Out here on the fringes of the Peak District, the moneyed split seems to be a new Range Rover or Defender (blinged up to the eyes with LED lights, big alloys etc or the opposite, ‘farmer chic’)

Love the steelies on the LC.

I had a LC loan car whilst working in the Middle East for a while absolutely loved it, a Gulf spec (poverty/utility spec) LC200, manual, 4.5, twin fuel tanks, cloth interior, big steelies, 7 seats, rear barn doors, if sold in the UK they'd go well imho...

The smallest 463 was 1760mm, but it expanded to 1857mm over it's lifetime, compared to the two models of range rover over the same time period at 1781mm and 1890mm which had far more space inside than the extra couple of inches would indicate.

I wish PH articules would stop spouting nonsense about the Jimny 'appropriating the G-Wagen's styling'. The Jimny is inspired by old Jimnies, which were around well before the G-Wagen - so if anything its the other way around.

Pretty much comes down to LCs being more capable offroad and stronger than Hiluxes, which makes them more popular in places where it really matters.

Rugged use buyers tend to go for the 70-Series LC rather than the more comfort-oriented versions though:

2560kg, that is the base weight without options I assume.
Still find it somewhat funny that 2,5 tonnes is touted as heavy, but this is one big car, and at the same time there so many cars above 2 tonnes already that don't even sit high and are clearly smaller and the mentioned SVR and Cayenne aren't far removed from 2,5 tonnes either... A more adequate comparison, a long Range Rover (non-sport) V8 sc 550ps nicely equipped is 2,7 tonnes kerb... no ladder frame iirc.

In this game, big car big V8, they are all heavy, but I'm actually suprised the new G isn't nearer 3 tonnes...

More secure and dry storage for tools and equipment , If you've ever had one of those hateful plastic tops on a pick up you would
see the advantage for certain jobs ...

Just buy a decent one? I have never had problems with them and having a separate compartment often means that any "work smells" such as wet/oily/dirty clothing are not actually in the vehicle cabin smile

I agree. Hilux is a much better option over IMO. A decent comparison would have been the Landcruiser against the Mercedes X250 Pure:-

I have one for work, they're great smile

Really depends on your use. Mate that worked in the mines in Australia for years said they use Landcruisers there (and Patrols back before they went soft) because they're still going strong long after the Hiluxes have been shaken to bits.

But if you're not perpetually abusing the proverbial out of it, a Hilux may well suit you better and they will still handle the rough stuff better than most vehicles.

I guess the ultimate decision about who is the winner is when the John Mc Cain sponsored group called ISIS will decide between the two on the battlefield.

The G (Gangster?) Wagon still looks like a shipping container though.

I'm struggling to think of any car with a worse image than an AMG G Wagon.
