Ah the long rumored not yet seen #teslakiller
Do you think Tesla are the pinnacle? I don't, sorry.

Are you not aware of the mule EV X3, or that BMW have trademarked i3,4,5 and 7, not to mention the carbon innovation and 12 all EV cars and I3 hybrids by 2025. BMW, being a proper company, not some fly by night plaything have stated that it's not 'viable' to make money from EV at the moment. Tesla don't care, because they are not a proper car company, their losses don't matter to them.
The iX3 just really underscores why these rumoured #teslakillers are just that, rumours. For all the song and dance about the EQC and eTron MB and Audi have only just managed to put battery packs in their existing mid-size SUVs, BMW made a good start with the dedicated i3 and i8 but are now just following the others and doing the same to the X3. The Taycan seems very exciting on paper but it's cut from the same cloth - except Porsche are using the Panamera rather than the Macan. They can all put out as many press releases about their investments as they like but at the end of the day it's hard to believe they're going to do anything other than continuing to just putting batteries in their existing ICE vehicles. JLR have made a good first effort with the iPace, but they've clear got a lot of catching up to do on engineering an EV: https://insideevs.com/efficiency-jaguar-i-pace-fal...https://jalopnik.com/1826920962https://jalopnik.com/jaguar-finally-confirms-the-2...

For all their faults as a company Tesla seem to be one of the only companies that is actually interested in making dedicated EVs and seem to be steps ahead of the others in the drivetrain tech. And let's be honest here, their major problem at the moment (apart from having a certifiable lunatic at the helm) is that demand is outstripping supply. There's worse issues that have than that.
Tesla are not the only ones making dedicated EV platforms. The Taycan and etron you mentioned are both on dedicated EV platforms. There are also EV platforms coming from Honda, Nissan, Renault, Kia, Hyundai, Aston Martin, Polestar and probably more.

I can't see Tesla imploding any time soon, (especially as they just started to make profit) but you seem to be seriously underestimating their competitors.

I just suspect that just by being a right stingy bd I am infinitely more environmental that those who are rushing to buy anything and everything in the name of saving the planet. biggrin
Probably. I'm a stingy bd myself dont usually spend on anything much.

WRT to housing, as you've pointed out houses tend to stick around a long time.

NZ housing stock is pretty damned poor overall though, double glazing has only been a requirement for a few years.. And where I live recently lost 20,000 homes to a natural disaster so I have no problems making a new home that is more eco friendly than average.

If I can find the right place I might renovate an old house but tbh that would mean stripping it back down to just a wood frame and wood is something NZ has plenty off.
That said, New Zealand is a odd one in that it runs an energy surplus most of the time, and if the aluminium plant closes then you'll have an absolutely massive surplus!

On that basis, you can run more heating without a great cost... There was a chap I knew in Taupo who was selling central heating plumbed into a submersible pump in most people's garden, and you'd get basically unlimited heating for peanuts on the geothermal energy.

As a use case, New Zealand would be a perfect country to run entirely as an EV cars, as there's enough power to support it, and no journey is really that far ;-)

The UK needs more houses (apparently) so they may as well be as efficient as possible... But I fully agree with the sentiment to stop buying crap you don't need!
Ah we still have a major coal plant on the north island and only 90% renewable or so, yes if the aluminium smelter closed we'd have a serious excess, they often hold us to ransom because its a big employer...

NZ ( like Norway) is ideal for EVs , shame our car fleet is an average of 15 years old :/ We still import 25 year old diesel suv's.
