Drift track at home: Time for Tea

Man with most understanding wife/neighbours in the world does what we're all thinking

The dream of building a full-sized race circuit in the garden of an enormous fantasy pad is probably common to just about every PHer old enough to buy a lottery ticket. But even with the means and the space, who would actually ever see it through (or win over a planning commitee).

Unless you've had the foresight to move to New Zealand, of course. And have equipped yourself with an extremely forgiving other half and the kind of neighbours that not only don't mind, but actually go to the trouble of helping you with construction. In that perfect storm, you'd almost be obliged to go ahead.

Certainly that's what Takeshi Teruya - a 37-year-old mechanic from Japan who now lives in NZ - thought when the idea of laying a track in his modest plot occured to him. Yes, it's just a simple loop with a few squiggles thrown in, but that's fine when all you're interested in doing is going sideways in your heavily modified Nissan Skyline 370GT.

The completed circuit is 130-metres long, and was made using recycled asphalt that our hero laid himself. This was essential to keep costs down - he spent $16,000 (just under £8,500) building the circuit, which significantly under the $40,000 quoted to him. Now he lives his dream by drifting everyday and boy does he look happy. His wife? Not so much. But you can't have everything. Apparently.

That was a "only in America" story... except it was in NZ. Totally nuts. Loved it! I'm amazed he hasn't dinged the house.

Just what I was thinking. His car winds up parked in front of the TV in his lounge room. Ooops smile

Got to hand it to him though. I wish I could do that, but here in London, my chances of pulling that off would be about zero.

I wonder if his house insurance knows about his little track, got to think that'll bump the premiums somewhat! Still looks like good fun and he's clearly happy!

Great concept but it looks too small, especially for that car.

What a fantastic idea. I am going to speak to my wife over dinner about building the same sort of thing here. Wish me luck. I will let you know how I get on..... biggrin

Right, I’m back.
It’s a no from my wife. Seems she hasn’t forgotten the time my son drove his grass track mini through our hedge.

I cant understand why, women usually love tyres being shredded, like the time my dad did a Burnout on his Fireblade on the path, he left the back door open so the house stank of roasted Bridgestone for ages, my mum wasnt pleased but he wasnt all that bothered, he just said she had been smoking in the house for years, first time he does it, he gets moaned at biggrin

Neighbours are getting race tracks closed by their moaning, this would be quite challenging in the neighborhood smile
