My Super Sports are coming up for replacement on my M140i (fronts have gone on the outer edges, and rears are down to 2.5mm) and I'd heard loads of good stuff about the Pilot Sport 4, even though it isn't a direct replacement for the Super Sport. The Pilot Sport 4s isn't yet available in 18" fitments, so it's a straight Super Sport vs Pilot Sport 4 choice, for me.

The car will never see a track, so I don't care about any advantage the SuperSports offer in this regard. For me, it's purely fast road use in all weathers. I find the SuperSports brilliant, wet or dry, in warmer temperatures, but they seem to go off noticeably once the temperature dips into single figures. I would be happy to sacrifice a little dry grip (there's loads anyway) for more consistent performance when it gets colder.

Going to bite the bullet in the next few weeks, so I would be keen to know the op's thoughts with a matching set of 4.
Should be getting them fitted this Saturday so I'll report back after giving it a thrashing around the peak district hehe

Worth mentioning, black circles have an offer on Michelin tyres currently (£40 off if you buy all 4)!

I had a quick look at PS4 tyre prices yesterday and Camskill were by far the cheapest I could find.

Yeah, I ended up getting my rears from there for £235 delivered - If you're buying all 4, blackcircles are ~£5-£10 cheaper atm, negligible but...

On the subject of PS4s (not PS4Ss, god they made it confusing), I run these on my daily and they seem to be a fantastic tyre (although I have very little evidence to compare it to on this car as I switched to PS4s shortly after I bought it)

However, given the Volvo is hardly the last word in handling finesse, I have to say the lateral grip seems really quite impressive, you can certainly dig in and lean on the outside tyre around a tight roundabout a lot more than a 13 year old V70 has any right to do hehe

They also seem to grip well in all weathers, wet / greasy weather again there seems to be a lot of grip to 'lean on', and much like the PSS seems to be very consistent over the life of the tyre, there's no sudden drop off, and even when worn, they're very confidence inspiring.

Does anyone know a place in the Camberley / Farnborough / Reading area that will fit internet supplied tyres for a reasonable price?

I went from MPSS to MPS4S on the M3 earlier this year. The latter's compound seems better on road, but the sidewall stiffness feels less. It's not a night and day difference, but is enough to notice.

How's it gone? I've just looked at my fronts, and the outer edge of the NSF has the lumps from the steel visible through the rubber. Frustrating when the rest of the tyre has 3mm, but hey ho. Anyway, going to have to get them changed this week. PS4 is a useful £25 a corner cheaper than PSS, but that's not the main consideration. Really interested to hear your views.

Cheers

I had them fitted Saturday morning and covered about 150 miles since, upped the tyre pressures to 35PSI on all corners and I have to say it's night and day difference from my previous MPSS/PS4 set up, no squirming/twitching when accelerating out of bends etc - Well worth opting for all 4. I can't comment on a MPSS/PS4 comparison as I bought my car with ~4mm MPSS' all around but I can confirm that putting PS4's on the front to match has sorted things out for me.

More generally on the PS4's they feel very safe in all conditions I've experienced so far, haven't experienced snow yet but I imagine they're a slight improvement on the MPSS - It's very much planted now in 1st/2nd even in the wet which I never had with the MPSS' in 1st, so yeah, go for it! hehe

Thank you, sounds good.

I've ordered a pair of PS4s for the front from Blackcircles which are being fitted Friday. Will replace the rears with the same next month. I had planned on doing all four after next payday, but the fronts (nearside mainly) won't wait, and with Christmas coming up, I need to spread the load a little bit.

I really like the MPSS in wet and dry, but not in the cold, when they seem to go completely to pot. OK, mine are pretty shagged now, but I remember feeling exactly the same last year when they still had 4mm on them.

I know the feeling, that's one of the reasons why I didn't opt for all 4 at the same time, as well as the fact I thought my ~3-4mm MPSS' upfront would last awhile (which they may have), but it just felt like they were fighting against each other in single figure temperatures - I'm sure you'll experience the same, could be worse, could be better with you keeping your MPSS' on the rear rather than up front like me - You'll have to wait and see hehe - Would be keen to hear your thoughts though!

I will post my thoughts if I haven't been killed to death on the first roundabout! biggrin

Cheers for the feedback though. Much appreciated.

Good to hear having the same all round sorted the twitchy sensation, certainly adds up.

I actually bought a full set of PS4S but only swapped the rears initially as the front PSS still had a good amount of tread left on them.

I couldn't bring myself to bin off a decent pair of PSS, so opted to roast the rear PS4Ss instead, and will then swap the (slightly narrower) front PSS to the rears and put the news PS4S on the front.

As and when I get around to this I shall try to remember to report back smile

Indeed, I think a lot is to be said for the 35PSI all around too, previously I was going for 32/34PSI as per BMW's recommendations, feels much better in that regard too now. I've found that tyre pressures is a verrrry subjective thing, everyone seems to have their own beliefs hehe

Sounds like a good idea haha - I've got a two 225/40/R18 MPSS with ~3-4mm tread hanging around if anybody here wants to claim them, don't think they're worth trying to sell!

Well, they're on, and set to 35psi the same as the rears. Only driven back from the tyre depot, but the only difference I can notice immediately is that they seem a touch noisier than the MPSS. No standout instability or other issues just yet, but I'm not going to push them until they are worn in.

Will report when I've done a few more miles.

You have 2 different grades of tyres on your car now OP and the rear PS4 is not at the level of your previous PSS hence the unruly rear end I'd say.
There is a heck of a lot of confusion over this. It's poor marketing and positioning on Michelin's part.

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/91...

And the tyre chooser on Michelin.co.uk recommends the PS4 for the M140i, a car that had PSS from the factory.

https://tinyurl.com/y929k298

I've read that the only scenario where the PSS outperforms the PS4 is on a dry track, where it might give a "few tenths" advantage over a lap. In all other respects, the PS4 either matches or outperforms it.

Yeah I've noticed they're noisier than the MPSS, just recently did a ~500 mile round trip from Warrington to Edinburgh and I picked up on it!

Noticed any instability issues since? The more I think about it, the more I think my instability issues were due to the fact my rear MPSS' were shagged, whereas the new PS4's upfront were very grippy in comparison, the rears obviously being the driven wheels causing the problems. Yours is the reverse so you may not get such noticeable instabilities. Maybe?

Sorry to crash the thread a bit but I am confused by the michelin products.
The MPSS is still standard fit on a number of new cars (ie makes that could have chosen another tyre) like Ford Fiesta st, Peugeot 308 GTI. I thought it was being phased out for the MP4S.
Please can anyone shed some light?
I have a C63 on PSS and planning what to do next. Love the PSS when they are warm but otherwise a bit of a hand full.
