Great thread, the 535d has always been a favourite of mine. All the positive comments also for me demonstrate what a shame it is that the demonization of dieselhas obscured what capable all round cars, these large engine diesels are. I mean for touring duties why would you pick the petrol version when the diesel is so much more frugal and real world as fast.
Slightly OT but that kind of comment makes out as if diesels are being wrongly persecuted? Diesel is a dirty fuel. These are great cars and I enjoy the wallop of torque when driving one, but as a 20yr motorcycle commuter who has had a heart attack att 44 I look at the research into air pollution and increases in heart/lung disease and wonder WTF I’ve been breathing in over the last two decades as these kind of barges have become massively popular.
Two years ago I’d have seriously considered buying one of these. Now I look at what they’re doing to air quality in our towns and cities and can’t wait for this flavour of car to die out.
Soz, don’t wanna piss on the chips of the thread, and of course petrol engines are not without their emissions issues, but the reason I wouldn’t rush to buy one now is that they’re killing my fellow man when they came about as a solution to CO2 being the evil to the plant from petrol engines.
Yet there everyone is worrying about whether it’s got the stty Nav or not!

In our household we have a 535d and a 330i. The 535 has lower CO2 emissions and when you compare the cleanliness of the exhaust tips, it is the dirty fuelled car's which are cleaner.Diesel is a dirty fuel. It takes few minutes in RS6 and 535d to realise these are not comparable. On paper they may look similar but in metal Audi is much much quicker and you can feel it straight away, its handling is also in different class. If you're after economy get 3.0TDI/530d sure, but don't fool yourself into thinking you have "almost RS" because you won't, not even close.
When reading fellow forum members posts I wanted to share my experience buying and selling number of second hand luxury (>£50k new) cars and my experience can be summed up in 3 points:
(1) vast majority of buyers just want to kick tyres and test drive fancy car, something they do en masse on Saturdays, no intention of buying, a lot of them is not even hiding this fact
(2) buyers want all possible options on car, even when I was selling vehicle with £25k options on it I heard "only Bose, should have B&O" etc, of course nobody is willing to pay penny extra for options and all other cars you will compete on autotrader will be absolute base, maybe with 1-2 options ticked, mostly with metallic paint or dodgy history
(3) at the end of day price is THE ONLY deciding and overriding factor for all buyers, no exception. I had a guy going for £100 cheaper car (£25k car) despite my being much better equipped, had better history, lower mileage and transferable warranty. All this didn't matter a bit for buyers.
My advise for new car buyers: don't care about 2nd hand car buyers, they are extremely demanding but not willing to pay for it. Buy car for yourself and drive it to ground, when it starts collapsing then sell it.

I have an F10 525d with the 3.0 litre engine and you will only see 40mpg or more with motorway driving below 70mph, and being very modest with the throttle on most journeys. Currently getting 37.2mpg with a mix of town and motorway driving at c. 80mph.
The E60 is a far nicer car to drive if you favour handling dynamics imo.
The problem is the auto gearbox is crap on them compared to the 8 speed in the F10/F11.

Nice. Fuel economy more like 30mpg though, and 530d gives 90% of performance, is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run. I'd go for the 530d.
I've just traded my 2015 535d estate, which had the higher 320 bhp output. 40 mpg is completely obtainable without having to drive like a saint all the time. Brilliant car. Hate diesel all you like, but few things can do what high power oil-burners can do to long distance, comfy travel.

I actually really like this, brilliant spec and it reminds me of an Alpina

Looks great in Luxury spec. Would prefer a different colour interior than coal hole.
I've had one of these for a couple of years now - great car for long commuting, comfortable and can shift when needed.
Not sure about near 50 mpg - real world I usually get just over 40mpg and low 40's on a long motorway journey - I did drive like a Grandmother yesterday and got 48 on a 20 mile mixed drive so I guess it's possible, if a little dull.
Can't really understand the dislike of the basic satnav over pro nav. We have another car with the proanv and I find the difference immaterial. Both use usb sticks for music storage (which is how the whole family stores music). From a selling point of view (when I ever get there, likely to be in about 4 years and another 100k miles) it will make a difference, but I won't be looking at selling it for £18k either. Personally I would prefer a panoramic roof if I had to make a choice.
Performance - the grunt is handy but as has been said it's no RS6 competition - although this article is the first I've read that had compared the two - seems an odd thing to do to me given the difference in focus and price. Boot is big enough normally, although a tad small when coming from a Range Rover.

What's crappier about the 6HP26 gearbox?
I've had that gearbox mated to a couple of petrol Bmw's and one diesel Bmw(it suited the diesel much better than the petrol for me), it can be very dim witted at times and it suits a laid back driving style far more, I found it a little annoying when pushing on. Whereas the later 8 speed does the laid back approach well, and it also works very well when you push on too. They really moved the game on with the 8 speed.
Interestingly, I just looked this car up and it must be Euro 6 compliant as isn't subject to the London ULEZ zone

Does anyone know when they first put the Euro 6 engine in these?
