Practicality rofl Why aren't we all driving Volvo estates then? Didn't they used to come with 5 pots too?

You've never been thrown down the road at nearly 9000rpm by a V10 have you...

A 5 cylinder may sound better than a 4 cylinder but don't even try to compare it to a V10.

WE are comparing them because a ttrs will accelerate faster than the most affordable R8 which is still 2x the price. Does the old Volvo do 0-60 mph in 3.5s? I didn’t think so

But it's a moot point as a TT is an ugly jelly lump of a car and altho very fast is not an alloy frame mid engined v8 or v10 baby/junior Super car like a gen 1 R8 and never will be.
The Gen1 is twice the price for a reason, its holding it's value as people realise how good they are as a package.
In theory I could have bought two "faster" TT's rather than a v8 R8 but why would I want a TT it's not got any appeal to me.

Sigh.

I will say this again.

ITS. NOT. ABOUT. JUST. SPEED.

Your life must be very simple if you view everything by one metric.

The drama the V10 creates when giving it full beans is like nothing I have ever experienced despite having had lots of fast cars previously. My manual R8 with 33k miles on it cost the same as a new TT-RS, did I ever consider the TT? Absolutely not.

My missus tries to curl up in a ball and shrieks if the revs go over 5,500rpm hehe

Besides, you really are a fking idiot if you can't tell the difference between a TT and an R8:-

It's like saying a Cayman is the same as GT3 RS or a 570S looks like a P1 hehe

I think the ttrs in that pic looks better than the r8 imo!

But back to topic! I don’t like the new one at all! I’d much prefer a mk1 v10 spyder or at a push the mk2!

I will never forget a v8 r8 coming past me at full chat driven like a maniac on a fast B road I was seriously impressed and thought it looked fantastic! So yes I’d spend 50k on one wouldn’t spend 140k on one is rather get a second hand Mclaren or Ferrari or even the Lamborghini
But at 50k it makes a nice car

Think new they’re about 50k overpriced

Good post until your last sentence

You aren't going to get a brand new 600+bhp V10 for £90k anywhere are you. There's Lotus Exiges at that price these days!

I'm not a fan of the MK2 or this latest facelift but £50k over priced!!! Seriously...
I'm curious now... on the basis of.....? Do tell.

You keep comparing them like a 10 year old playing Top Trumps if that is your thing. It is a lovely childish game of statistics..

Forgive me however, I prefer to do this.

The colour and spec of the R8 is terrible and the TTRS looks pretty much as good as it ever will in that example.

Comparing new with old is a rediculous argument, £50k doesn't even get you into a new M4.

The R8 looks like someone has sat on a TT.

V10 is nice though

I think kind of proves what some are saying, I don't think anyone on here would "mistake" an R8 for a TT, but there is a strong familial resemblance in both front and side views. Notice the distinctive grill and the way the strake from the base of the grill extends through the wing/bonnet interface. Similarly the side profile is similar though the R8 is lower and longer, the "curves" are from teh Audi toolbox if you will.

The R8 lacks visual drama so it doesn't stand out visually on the road. I agree that the original R8 was much more distinctive. IMO

Much more dramatic grill, love the look of the vents either side of the grill (I assume these are functional for brake cooling?) I think this is a general problem with facelifts, the design language defined in purity on the original can never be as coherent so the design becomes less of a whole*.

  • all this just my own blather on design and entirely subjective.

Agree with others, I prefer the first gen R8. The new one whilst i'm sure it's very accomplished and a very good car, looks a little bland in comparison to the competition and it's predecessor.

What car costing a maximum of £140k (new) makes the R8 Performance look bland?

The competition doesn't come into it , i'm talking purely about looks (not how it drives etc), and in my opinion (and only my opinion) it looks bland and doesn't stir the soul. Supercars would be an emotive purchase for me and not just about numbers, and the 2nd gen R8 (performance or not) doesn't get me excited.

In reference to my comment about 50k overpriced I just don’t think it’s special enough to command that price tag

To me if you’re spending that sort of money you would be buying a sports car/supercar from that type of brand like Aston Martin Mclaren Ferrari Lamborghini! Now I believe the new vantage is around 120k I don’t like it but it’s still an Aston so has heritage! The Audi is just an Audi! When you buy a Aston or a Ferrari or Mclaren it makes you feel you’ve got something special something exclusive!

You go upto someone and say I drive a Mclaren or a Ferrari or Aston or Lamborghini and they instantly think feck they’re expensive now walk up to that person and say you drive an Audi and you r lost their interest and then you have to explain that it’s an r8 and it’s this and that and it’s basically a Lamborghini to which point the person thinks, “so he wants a Lamborghini but can’t afford it”

Audi to me is like the sub brand! Like the jag xk was basically an Aston the Maserati to Ferrari and that doesn’t make you feel special

And for that I wouldn’t spend more than 100k on a new one I’d rather get a second hand premium supercar brand!

Hence why you see maseratis cheap you see jags cheap and you see the Audi’s cheap! Just doesn’t have the desirability for me! I’ve been in Cheryl tweedys old black gen 1 and that was nice

My boss has an old Vanquish. Loads of Ford parts in the interior. He should have just bought a Mondeo.

There are people who buy. Then there are many MANY more people who tell you what they would do different if they were buying, but up to that point have not. I don't wish to cast assertions as we all have an opinion, but your comment about worrying how others might perceive your car choice suggests you are, presently, not in the market for any of the cars you outline? Nothing wrong with that by the way, my point is being in a position to buy tends to make you look at things differently, especially when you have bought a few times. Caring about the fictional people at a party comparing cars is not something I think many worry about who do buy, though some I do to be fair.

It would be interesting to see your car history

I never went up to anyone and said I have a Maserati or an R8 or a 911. I didn’t buy the cars for this reason and even if I did why wouldn’t I say I drive an R8. Or say I drive an Audi and have a little laugh to myself about keeping my baby supercar secret. Nice to have the opportunity to brag but keep it on the low down. Only a tosser who know nothing about cars would reply and say ‘it’s only an Audi’

I never tell my coworkers when I change cars. Apart from the fact that they aren’t interested, it looks like the most pathetic showing off and rubbing their faces in it. One time one of the PA’s directly asked me what cars I had and I told her A Maserati, a Porsche and a Range, she was flabbergasted that I had 3 nice cars and never told anyone. It’s about being classy and the R8 has that in spades whilst being an amazing car to drive too

A lot of the appeal about the car is that it is subtle anyway. Ferrari’s and Lambos are so shouty it’s not everyone’s thing

Whether it is special enough to command that price tag is a question for those with the means to buy one.

You might live in a 4 bedroom detached house in Surrey worth £1m. That doesn’t mean a 1 bed flat in Knightsbridge worth the same is bad value for someone that wants a 1 bed flat in Knightsbridge.

And for someone living in a 1 bed flat in Leicester worth £100k to slag off the pad in a London and say it’s not worth it or a waste of money, how is their opinion relevant or worth listening to when they aren’t the target market, can’t afford one, and have a completely different set of values, requirements and expectations attached to a purchase of that type
