Pretty sure I read that the Qashqai is one of the worst real life Nox emissions polluters too.
Do people really care about this stuff?

Industry pollutes on a monumental scale, I don’t hear outcry over that?

I think we can assume that the allegations are well-founded; Nissan would hardly humiliate themselves on global news if they weren't 100% certain. To me this is a reminder that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely; it is very hard for most people to remain level-headed when they are given total control and are praised at every turn. Conversely, Nissan perhaps put a bit too much blind faith in their 'miracle worker' CEO, and should have strived harder to keep hold of their critical faculties.

In terms of his legacy, I think it is mixed. On the one hand, he turned around Nissan and steered it away from bankruptcy. On the other hand, he turned them away from selling exceptionally well-engineered cars for unexceptional prices, and towards Renault platform-sharing and cost-cutting. The nineties Nissans - think K11 Micra, Primera, or 200SX - had no real mechanical flaws, apart from eventually rusting away. Their successors were not always so dependable. He launched the 350Z and the R35 GT-R, but he killed the smaller, lighter, more affordable 200SX line, and declined to resurrect it with the exciting ID-X concept.

It's hard to say, but there is speculation that Nissan will use this moment to pull away from the Renault alliance somewhat, and re-assert their independence, being much stronger now than when they were rescued by the French in '99.

Exactly. It’s the biggest contribution to traffic congestion in these parts since the man who had to walk in front of cars holding a red flag.
So what you are saying is that if the Qashqai hadn't have been brought to market there would considerably less congestion in your parts as the current owners would be left with no option but to walk as oppose to drive something else thus creating exactly the same amount of congestion? It's an interesting theory.

Yes but nobody, not seeking to have a fight about Brexit, actually reads NPE... That's why I posted in GG

Hopefully there'll be some lurid stories of sexual impropriety and outrageous embezzlement to have made it worthwhile.

I'm sure he'll have the means to outdo this guy

Well known that psychopathy and leadership go almost hand in hand. This sounds like a classic example.
This exactly. Nice article by the way.

But yes, it's not the whole story, though the £34M salary figure seems to be most quoted.
Very very good laugh

Is this misreporting £34M or misappropriating £34M and then not reporting it? It sounds like he paid himself more than he was entitled.
AFAICT it's not that he was paid too much or too little but rather didn't tell the correct amount to the Japanese authorities who require any salary over 100 million yen to be disclosed. And this amount was off by £34M over several years. Which to me seems like a slightly more subtle thing than just trousering stacks of money undeclared.

It should be noted that Ghosn has apparently already been arrested.
He'd have to some special skills and privileges to be able to withdraw £34M without rising suspicions so I'm guessing it's some sort of him not reporting to officials kind of situation.
I thought it was "not reporting misuse of company funds for his own benefit" to the tune of £34 million.

Because...who'd be dumb enough to report misuse of company funds to your benefit, to the tune of £34 million. That'd be stupid.

I'm guessing we're talking use of super yachts, top hotels for the family holiday, company owned cars, new clothes and jewellery for the wife (say worn at one company event, then pocketed), etc etc

The £34 Millon is related to under reporting the last 5 years of income. The correct figure was twice that.
The miss appropriation of company funds seems to be related to the purchase of 4 homes around the world at Nissan cost.

How did he do a great job ? , he brought two semi crap car companies together and made both totally crap ! every micra engine needed a timing chain @ 40k miles every navara either blew up or snapped in half every qashqai needs a new engine every 2 years as does the capture and auto gearbox's that fall to bits . i think he merged 3 companies the third being cadburys . he should get life .
I'd say saving 2 companies from going pop and saving tens of thousands of jobs in the process isn't a bad job. I've also seen to Navaras this morning that hadn't snapped in half or blown up, so I think you may be a little out on your views on how reliable their products are?

Is it just me but somewhat reminiscent of a previous Lotus CEO re houses......

What makes no sense to me is how would anyone know what he has or hadn’t declared on his personal tax return apart from the Tax Office or his Accountant?! Why would Nissan know anything on this front?!

My ex's grandfather used to host Ghosn on his yacht in Greece for a week or so every year.

Ex's Grandad was accordingly the Nissan/Renault distributor in Greece.

Cool story I know.
