Departing two-time champ's car gets a mild makeover to mark his 314th and final GP
This weekend, Fernando Alonso will race in his 314th and very last Grand Prix as a Formula 1 driver. To mark the departure of the two-time champ from the F1 grid in Abu Dhabi, McLaren will decorate car 14 with stripes and logos in Alonso's colours, blue, red and yellow. Team boss Zak Brown said the changes, which were apparently welcomed by the FIA, will help to make this an "especially emotional" send-off for the Spaniard. Fitting - although we suspect Alonso would've preferred to be given a bit more downforce and some extra horsepower...
Alonso recently said that he's happy with all that he's achieved in F1, and yes, two world titles and 32 wins is pretty good going. But many (almost certainly including Alonso himself) believe he never reached his full potential, having been stuck in uncompetitive cars for a large portion of an 18-season career. Two titles could have so easily been three, four or maybe even five, because he finished second in the standings three times, each only a few points away from the top spot. Alonso's latest stint at McLaren, which started in 2015, pretty much sealed his fate. We haven't seen the 37-year-old on the podium since 2014.
But before we get the tiny violins out, remember that Alonso is not technically retiring. He already has his sights set on a new motorsport challenge, the Triple Crown. To become only the second person after Graham Hill to win that, Alonso must win the Monaco GP, Le Mans and Indy 500, the first two of which he's conveniently already done, with two wins in Monte Carlo and a 2018 win at the 24-hour race with Toyota Gazoo this June. Next year, he'll return to Indianapolis with McLaren to chase the final piece of the puzzle - something nobody in their right mind would bet against him doing successfully. He's also not written off a return to full-time single seater racing in 2020.
