Nice as this is, I don't see it getting a look in against the I-Pace. It already one German car of the year IIRC.
I’m surprised many PH-ers place much stock in this award of European COTY as Vauxhalls have won 3 out of the last 10 years.
Not many seem to rate them well on here

Do Sportscars ever win this award? It seems to be reserved the for the most boring, and usually worst looking car currently on sale.

From everything I have read, I do hope that the A110 wins, and not some large SUV- even an electric one. As a serial owner of some of the older Alfas, the 4c could have its attractions but IMO it is impractically wide for A and B road fun. Having seen the original A110s being raced at Angouleme I love the retro style of this latest one.

Peugeot 3008? Both that and the 308 have also won in the last decade

Not drove either but prefer Alfa 4c for it's carbon tech and looks.
Hahahahaha. Right. Drive them and you'll see where the 4C ends up in your ranking.

"Alpine A110 makes European Car of the Year finals". Rightly so, hope it wins as it deserves it.

So the unanimous French vote will go with this....none will vote for the Citroen then....

If you do not understand how great these cars are, then may I direct you to another website.

These cars are super light, pointy, quick and fun at low speeds as well as high. Whats not to like?
The gearbox.
Not driven one but from the rave reviews a manual gearbox would seem to be the only major omission.

I think its testament to how good this car is when you consider that it doesn't have a LSD/manual gearbox and its turbo charged. Usually for a drivers car most people want a N/A engine/manual/LSD, this has none of those things and its still a winner from the glowing reviews.

I think the 928 is the most exotic winner ever, probably even pipping the Mercedes 450SE in the expensive stakes too. But looking at the list there has never been a 2 seater winner.
My personal opinion is that the A110 is a stunning looking car. But I have never been in one, nor have I been in the Alfa 4C. But a friend told me last summer that his 4C is an impossible everyday car. Too loud, cramped & uncomfortable, according to him.
Back to COTY... isn't the new W177 Mercedes A Class just a heavy facelift of the W176, which came 4th in COTY 2013. Or is the W177 indeed 'all new'?

I can't see it winning - it's not the right sort of car!

How can it compare to previous winners like the Fiat Uno and Tipo, Talbot Alpine, Renault 19, Citroen XM and similar dross! laugh

Mind you if Chris Harris gets a vote he might not cast it in favour of the Alpine - the one he tested needed an on-board fire extinguisher!

This is great news. I don't think it will win. Probably an electric car on the list that will win, but great its made the shortlist.

So pleased this car has shown all the typical Pistonheads naysayers who a year ago were saying it would never sell, was too expensive for a Renault, bla, bla.

The same sort who are now slating the Toyota Supra before they've seen it or driven it!!

I've been reading my old Brooklands Books edition of the Alpine cars. I love all of them. So the Alpine is on my short list of new cars on sale in 2018 that I intend to own at some point. Its not actually a huge long list tbh. Stuff like Toyota GT86, Mazda MX5 MK4 182, Ford Fiesta ST and maybe the BMW M2. Most modern performance cars I admire but don't actually want to own tbh. The Alpine is a usable, compact mini supercar and I hope other manufacturers will follow suit and give us light, every day enjoyable cars like this.

I don't really care about ECOTY really but I hope it sells well. I feel the small coupe market is endangered and I'd like to see more choice around.

Ha ha. Sales are not part of the judging criteria for this award and they are carefully managing supply to offset the usual Renault depreciation. You’ll still need deep pockets though, it’s a tragedy they didn’t get the price point right (at £35k the thing would have been a runaway success.) Plenty of cars tank which have positive press on launch, so is no guide to the market and I can easily see it going the way of the 4c. Damn shame if so as the more cars in this segment the better.

If the two-seater were to take the top spot when the judge's decision is announced in March, it'd be the first sports car to do so in forty years.
wink

Except for the I-Pace, the competition is dreadfully dull. I hope the machine from the company based in Dieppe, just off the D927, opposite a racecourse, does well.

I never understand the statement, at this level, that a car should be £XX,xxx...
Ok, are you saying the A110 should be, as the car is now, aluminium etc.. £35K?
I’d so do you believe Renault are over charging for this bespoke alli chassised, hand built light weight sports car by £10-15k?
