Renault Megane R26.R: Spotted

Everything lives in the shadow of Renault Sport's first stripped-out special. It is priced accordingly

A week ago we discovered that the Renault Sport Megane Trophy has improved on the bar set by the standard 280 model. It's slightly quicker and slightly sharper than its lower-powered sibling, and therefore worthy of both its badge and the premium charged for it. But is it as incisive as the previous generation Trophy? Even with four-wheel steer and all the latest party tricks? Prior wasn't entirely convinced, which suggests the Renault Sport experience - so often defined by the quick Megane - is still less vivid that it once appeared.

We can thank the R26.R for that. As the brand's first go at turning its Focus rival into a 911 GT3-esque track warrior, the R26.R set the bar so high that each successive hot Megane has been presented with the daunting task of living up to its mechanical benchmark. Arguably none has done it quite like the original. Even the last equivalent model, the entirely excellent 275 Trophy-R, was somewhat hindered by its stronger (and therefore heavier) shell and the use of glass back windows, as per modern safety regulations.

The R26.R, then, is already well established among the ranks of modern classics. Its formula, of course, is now so well set in stone it virtually ranks as commandments. Without a radio, rear seats, sound-deadening, air con and anything else deemed weighty and non-essential to the pleasure of driving (even the passenger airbag was removed!), the hottest Meg was a substantial 123kg lighter than the standard Renault Sport model. And you really could feel it. 230hp from a turbocharged 2.0-litre is nothing special today (it's only 30hp clear of our fleet Fiesta ST's 1.5), but in a 1,252kg car, it's enough to ensure genuinely rapid progress.

But the R26.R was at its most invigorating through the bends. Thanks to that weight saving the car's spring rates were actually wound back by 10 per cent, but it got far more advanced dampers to create something that rode rather nicely but had body control more comparable to a class of cars two or three leagues above its pay grade. Coupled with optional Toyo Proxes R888s and a bit of Dieppe geometry magic, it meant the R26.R's chassis could be hustled around corners with delightful precision and predictability, but in a way which didn't limit its adjustability or entertainment value. The car worked for you, rather than you toiling for it.

It's an icon of driving, alright, and prices today - in a swollen market - reflect that. With only 230 examples of a global 450-car run headed to Britain, its values were never likely to plummet, although they still make eye-watering viewing for anyone who remembers how much trouble Renault had shifting the car back in the bad old days of 2008. Today's Spotted brings the sense of retrospect into sharp focus as it claims to be among the former press cars. Clearly no-one is holding that against it - especially as 002 has remained entirely original and only racked up 22,000 in three owners. The last one even had it dry stored as part of a collection, which is something you may want to consider when weighing up the £31,990 asking price.

back to the point of not being able to sell them...

Arnold Clark in Grangemouth were selling a split new one with cage and toyos (white) for £17995....you only regret the things you dont do.

I remember walking into Renault Enfield and being offered the one they had in the showroom for 18k - cage, titanium exhaust, the works. Should have said yes

Strong money, but low mileage. Prices for the Trophy-R are pretty strong too. It's not for me this one, as using it properly would damage its value (sadly). I think I would buy a regular R26 and modify it or, better still, a 250/265/275.

A shame, but it was inevitable that they would become a collector's item.

No doubt special, but I'd far rather have this if I was spending ~£30k-ish..

I actually own a Megane 225, have done since it was new in 2006. The R26.R is an amazing hot hatch, superb in track and noticeably lighter and more nimble than the 'full fat' version I have. I actually also owned a re-mapped 225 Trophy as well was an excellent daily car.

I can see the .R being somewhat of a cult car, it was the last of the MKII Megane RS models and the best for sheer driving enjoyment.

That said, even as an avid RenaultSport fan I wouldn't spend that kind of money. Admittedly it's a very low mileage example for it's age and you would have to be an utter RenaultSport fan to spend that on it. Trouble is that a car like this is all about how it drives, it's not pretty, it's not overly comfortable but it is a fantastic drive. You spend that kind of money on it, you'd assume your'e investing so wouldn't plan to drive it. Can't imagine someone spending that and taking it on track. Fair play if they do though.

Didn't they end the run early or at least reduce the UK allocation? I remember people on here laughing off the £18k they were going for new at the time, they simply couldn't shift them.

The advert says, "This car was used as an official UK press car."

So basically every Tom, Dick & Harry motoring journo has kicked its head in. Granted unless you know them, you don't know how the previous owners of your car have driven it. But in this case, seeing your car when it's new bouncing off the limiter & probably driving on two wheels isn't a good selling point!

Oh, and the price is nuts!!

Correct. They sent a number of them back to Europe as they didn't sell in huge numbers over in the UK.

Trouble you had was that the R26 was an almost identical car but not stripped out. The R26 handled virtually as well what with the LSD but was a bit heavier having proper glass, rear seats etc. That was a very popular model.

Great cars, the inflated value reflects theirrarity and greatness. When you consider people are trying to sell Golf GTI CSS's for 40k plus then this is decetn value. There are less of them and they're more hardcore, arguably more focused.

I currently own a Megane Trophy R and it is an epic car, just epic. I've been looking to change it and driven various other hardcore machines (exige S2 / V6 / Elise etc) and there really is not a lot that has the same grin factor, it just feels alive and eggs you to drive it harder. The grip is mind boggling. I'd urge anyone to have a go in one or the R26R before casting aspertions in relation to their increasing value! smile

For context, Steve Sutcliffes back to back test of the Golf GTI CSS and MEgane Trophy R showed the Golf only a few tenths of a second faster around a track. That is incredible when you cosider it's lighter and more powerful the much older Meg. As Steve said, a 911 would struggle to go faster, makes you realise how capable they are!

Lovely thing, but cant help feel its expensive.

You can pick up a similar age and mileage, fresh import, Honda Integra DC5 for just over half the cost of the R26R, which will offer equivalent fun and performance, or a DC2 if you want the raw experience and don't mind something a little older. Still looks great too

good man!

really impressive weight savings on these cars (112kg!) a proper reduction (take note porsche!)

the original Megane R was much more fun than the trophy r which I drove and quite frankly felt boring on track
