There are 2 forums i go on daily, if not spending most of the day on. PH and ARRSE.

https://www.arrse.co.uk/community/

Now for those that dont know ARRSE is a military (mainly Army orientated) forum which like, PH, has different sections relating to certain mil and non-mil aspects. Of course the majority being mil.
But the layout is better than PH and you even get a "like" option!
There is a section called the NAAFI where anything, and i mean ANYTHING goes. Obviously there is a lot of squaddie sense of humour which can be dark but its moderated quite well and very rarely, in fact i dont remember a time a thread was pulled.
Funnily enough a thread was pulled an hour ago in the PH's Supercar section over a company that had gone into liquidation and then a off-shoot had continued with questionable ties to liquidated company.
There are Ad's on ARRSE but they are not intrusive and the forum owners dont seem to be too concerned on what is said on there.
Always said to myself that PH could learn a thing from ARRSE but i think with this new direction, as people have said earlier, PH will disappear unless its extracted by individuals and run like ARRSE.
Are you me?

Saved me a good 10 minute type there, thanks!

PH is the best general site on t'web.

If there is anything that I want to know I can get a sensible answer here. Obviously, I'll get a lot of st as well, but there will be a sensible answer amongst all the dross - and I'm happy with that. The Alpha Cabs thread (not my thread) is an excellent example of what I mean.

The trouble for CarGuru is that there is no profit in this. I can't see a forum-based website that gets 200 posts per minute surviving out of private hands. Self-moderation is the only way to survive and a corporation cannot rely on self-moderation.

Dear Mr CarGuru, please shut down the Liverpool FC thread asap.

Thanking you.
Not seen it, but what have you got against a scouser with an old Mazda?

Plenty - my former OH was a Scouser and I had an old Mazda 4 years ago that was even more miserable!

But back on topic I really can't see this sale going well - surely "CarGurus" are just trying to re-invent Auto-Trader with their apparent emphasis on serving traders?

That doesn't look promising for the "Gassing Station", and if that goes I'll be gone too!

I really can't find any enthusiasm for "apps" (I'm probably too old for that sort of nonsense anyway) and I don't want to be trying to see photos for cars for sale on a phone when I could look at them on a PC!

Still it's been good knowing you all. laughthumbup

I don't think there will be much investment in the fora architecture if any.

Can't see the forums lasting very long tbh. CarGurus have bought the classifieds to take on AT, that's obvious, when they see the ROI that the forums (don't) provide i've no doubt that they'll just kill it off.
I suspect that the forums supply much of the traffic and the lurking eyeballs that end up in the classifieds.

This was the reason that MoneySupermarket bought MoneySavingExpect about 5 years ago.

Forums are a nightmare to police but they deliver an enormous footprint and draw far larger numbers of new users than any listing service for a much smaller sum of money.

They might tinker with it a bit but it doesn’t seem likely that they will make massive changes just keep the brand at arms length and divert as much traffic from it to their house model.

Its got to be better than being run by a company that demonstrably doesn't give a f&*k about privacy, security, usability or the general wellbeing of their content creators.

I for one welcome our CarGuru overlords.
I know that I'm a bit behind the times as the last few days have been busy fixing stuff. No sooner had some piece of automotive or domestic kit been sorted than something else has needed attention, so this post is done during a short break from spannering.

However just to say I completely echo the above post and welcome CarGurus.

And Heseltine etc al, toddle off, there's a good chap. One always got the impression that the PH staffers were/are decent tykes struggling with no resources and a dinosaur overlord who didn't understand nor care.

Onwards and upwards, CarGurus you have potentially acquired a helluva knowledge resource, one covering just about any subject under the sun, not just cars. I know personally that there are folks on here who are renowned world authorities in their field of expertise.
