The clean, simple, uncluttered format of the forums is absolutely excellent. No signatures with sparkly bits, etc is excellent.
Agreed. Avatars and signatures are just ste that is not required.
People have been saying the PH forums will die because it doesn't have the extra tat like signatures and avatars for the past 15 years, I honestly think one of the reasons that some people stick around for so long is the layout of the site is so simple and uncluttered. That and the wide variety of topics covered - I'm following a thread about a guy who is restoring a series 1 Elise, now I'm sure I could find similar info over at SELOC or a Lotus specific Facebook page if I looked hard enough but having it amongst threads on land speed record attempts, computer games, etc. is a fantastic thing.

From my lofty perch, I would say...

Don't worry about it.

I don't pay any money to anyone. I don't have any ads. If PH irritates me, either now, or in the future I will simply stop using it.

What is there to worry about? If you are unhappy, move on.

It's just another motoring forum.

I assume this will mean that PH will lose its links with Autocar and What Car?

Agh, I hate tricky maths.
How was lunch at the cosey club?, it looks like i am being dragged to leicester for our annual traipse through the gutter.

Is it still ok for lunch?

btw the answer you're looking for is zero
There's a risk of appearing ungrateful here, and I don't want to do that because I value recommendations from PHers, which as a rule are very good. But there are exceptions to every rule.

It wasn't cosy and it isn't a club. They allowed me in without hesitation, which evidences entry requirements too low for any genuine club.

It was staffed by butch looking, nose ring wearing, waitresses in dungarees, for whom smiling was just too big a deal.

I ordered steak which may have been an error because I can imagine the staff holds the view that, "meat is murder". They had certainly murdered my steak, having prepared it only by removing the polythene and throwing it briefly into a flat pan. I could more easily have used it to re-sole my shoes than eat it, and the soles of my shoes would probably have tasted better.

My wife ordered something veggie, which was also oddly lacklustre.

The other diners comprised a sad-looking early Christmas party, who had long since given up on life.

Only the wine got me through the ordeal, which I had to fetch myself from the bar. Even once there, I had to wait for the barman to finish his conversation with a waitress before I was served.

We went to Carluccios for a second lunch about an hour and a half later.

It i probably entirely different at the weekend, when semi-naked ex-models serve haute cuisine. Probably.

But thank you for the maths tuition - do you do home tutoring?

And that was mediocre and overpriced.

What are the alternatives? I've almost spent half my life on PH (eek!) and haven't bothered looking at what else is about.

Company with ads listings business buys another ads listings business to grow its market share...quite normal. Would imagine though like any acquisition they will evaluate the relative value of the staff, infrastructure etc. and make the appropriate calls in line with their strategy for the purchase. I am sure we will see the Buying section start to look like the CarGurus platform in the not so distant future. Agree with others though, the news front page is pretty much pointless and is just poorly rehashed copies of other material on the web.

Once the/a forum is up and running, how much does it take/cost to keep it running?

It would depend on what server and bandwidth is required. The highest end dedicated server from the people I have used before is abut £400pm

reverse DNS gives: ec2-176-34-250-240.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com

will cost quite a lot - our servers, are c. £250 a month (high end dedicated servers) - but the real cost is not the hosting infrastructure, because in reality the bandwith on a text mainly forum is not un-manageable - but the cost of people... which is why Haymarket's service level has dropped - because they aren't prepared to invest in people, either to update the technology / to moderate / to write content / etc....

We could always ask Petrol Ted kindly to resurrect Blatters, there will be enough traffic when PH closes down, and it will just seem like old times.

We can still bicker and fight, call each other names, troll, be asreholes, tell porkies about cars we don't actually own, big ourselves up, go the Elevenerife, say we earn £10m pa, have a garage full of exotic classics, are all Company Directors, are all legal experts, offer unbiased relationship advice, tell of our conquests on Match.com, preach to people who get caught speeding, tell of our driving god exploits, and even offer medical advice, who needs doctors, get banned, have multiple log ins, and learn the Welsh language.

Yep should be great smile

What is PH - as in, the forum aspect, worth?

Anyone in the industry care to comment?

Ignoring all the add-on stuff like classifieds and the news articles etc, what is a realistic cost per month JUST to host/run the forums only, with no hosted image content (photos would need to be hosted externally on imgur/flickr/whatever) ? I think it was Bill? that provided some database, post and user figures a few pages back for something to work with.

Perhaps they would be prepared to sell them off!

Anyone here got £1.50 and a constitution of steel?

The forums, a low multiple of the ad revenue earnings minus the hosting up keep. I'd keep them on purely as a traffic drive as they almost cost nothing to run but are still well placed SEO. They certainly would be stupid to shut them down.

The classified section would likely have the sale up around £10m for the whole business.
