It did slow down and suffer a bit when Ted ran it. He seemed like a one man band so it was accepted. I expect Haymarket got a shock when they looked inside.

I thought things actually got better for the first few Haymarket years but then they seemed to give up.

So hopefully this new lot will not only keep the forums going but actually spend something on them. Seems unlikely though if they’re all about the classifieds and not even from the U.K.

What was that website Ted set up after PHs? I went there years ago but it was a bit too car focused and quiet at the time, has it picked up?

Then there’s chewthefat which used to be a great little forum and seems to have developed its own distinct identity.

Reddit I like but it’s no alternative to PHs, it’s a completely different kind of site.

Like buttons on forums kill any conversation - worst thing ever

Well after Avatars, Signature pictures and Signature gifs - just fking stop it!!!
I really appreciate PHs simplicity - but you can turn avatars and signatures off in most forums.

Not on any of the others I frequent sadly

The only one that comes close to PH for simplicity and clean viewing is a one marque closed shop

Actually, you are right. I just visited an old haunt to check and the latest version of the forum is so 'social' that you can't hide that stuff anymore. It's a bit of mess to be honest.

Yeah I culled a heck of a lot of forums a while back but ones with flashing banners, gif sigs and avatars as well as animated ste everywhere were the first to go biggrin

Blatters, but that has since closed down.

CTF is dead, had a total of 59 posts in a day when I looked last week.

So we should keep our fingers crossed re PH.

All the posters complaining bitterly about PH, how it is loaded with ads, how slow it is, how bad the moderation is, how bad the car ads section is, how bad the development team is, how antiquated it is, etc, etc, ad nauseam ,all of which we pay the grand sum of £0.00 for, should be careful what you wish for.

If ever there was a case for a new owner to be closing it down, this is it.

This site must have the record for the most, in terms of numbers, miserable old gits in a single place on the internet smile

I dare say the Daily Mail comments section would have us beat there.

Adding a like button would quickly kill all the necessary reply to comments saying +1 or single Smilies replies.

No one here is talking about adding avatars or signatures...maybe get a grip a little?

Those talking about migrating to a commercial or Open Source forum platform are expressing a legitimate concern that those "features" (sic) would be added by default, unless actively disabled.

So, yes, people *are* talking about that.

Sounds like a USP

Couldn’t that be monetised somehow? hehe

- Wouldn't have a nice easy to use image upload facility.
- No single signin with google/facebook.
- No way of 'mentioning' a user.
- No wysiwyg editor.
None of these are of any particular importance or interest to me, to be honest. Speaking personally, I mean.

At least we now have https and some semblance of a mobile/tablet experience. Crap though it is.

CarGurus could do a lot worse than just leave things as they are. Maybe hire a contractor for a few weeks to sort out the worst of the remaining defects, but not much more. It would be the lowest-cost option (short of closing the forums, I mean).

I very much doubt that CarGurus have the intent to do a thorough overhaul as many wish for.

I’d be happy if they just kept the forums going. Unfortunately i’m not sure that it will be high on their priorities.

Each to their own, but while I mainly use the site on my mobile and it does now work, its crap compared to a modern well designed multi-device scaling site.

The fact its a pita to upload photos, and the other limitations there, is one of the reasons people move forum forums to the likes of facebook. Ditto while I have gown up with it, non-tech people dont want to learn BB code to chat online anymore.

Single sign-in is in level a nice to have you don't need, it lowers the effort for new members to join, and returning members to login, that's a good thing through and through,

Mentions is again a gooey nice to have, but its also really handy if you want to quickly refer to another user, in a way that will get theres and others attention.
