Hi everybody,

Just wondering if anyone knows the best way to get a car from the uk to France (Lyon region) without having to drive all the way.
I can drive to Dover (eurotunnel) or Newhaven (Dieppe). I don't really want to cross half of France driving. Any auto trains to recommend or else?

Cheers

No motorail service to Lyon. Pay someone to drive it down?

I just don't want to get it to much on roads at this time of the year. I can drive it but the car is never out on the road during winter season. I might have to look at renting a truck in that case?

I have used this company before and they were helpful and reasonably priced.

If time permits, and the issue is just driving through the north of France in winter, you could take the Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry and drive across.

Ouch! Just been quoted close to 2k for it. To be honest, I think that it is actually reasonably priced but not in my budget sadly.

You're looking at 900km...plus a long and expensive boat trip. And the Pyrenees.

A friend of mine started a transport business a while back and regularly travels through France. He shifts absolutely anything, from worthless hatchbacks to classic Astons and everything in between. He should be a bit cheaper than the bigger organisations so worth a call.

OP,

If it's of any interest.

I semi - regularly drive in France for various reasons ~ going to Paris tomorrow as it happens.

I live 15 miles from Dover.

If you can get the car to me, get me on your insurance (51yo clean licence), I could drop you back to Ashford International Rail Station, get a cheap DFDS ferry, drive it to Lyon and get a cheap Easyjet flight back.

A bit of fag packet maths, depending on fuel/tolls/flight etc would probly cost £500 or so.

If that works, PM me and we can discuss it further.

£350 for the ferry plus £100 for petrol is still cheaper than the £2k to transport it, and that drive is a pro rather than a con driving

As the OPs issue appears to be grotty winter roads, keeping the drive to Northern Spain and Southern France avoids that smile

Ummm, even if you ignore the Pyrennees, this will include some pretty grotty continental France in winter, some of it above 500 meters. Motorway boring as hell, interesting roads will mean 12 hours +. The OP may or may not want to do that.

Rent a car transporter? Should be £100 a day. How long are you in Lyon?

Thankl you guys for all the formidable offers and options offered. It looks like I am going to have to drive it for the moment. It's not really a problem but with older cars, there is always a worry of braking done somewhere. I'll let you know later what is my option and if someone need sweets or Cheddar to be delivered to your relatives in France, you know I can deliver on my way to Lyon! smile
