Which company do you think produce the best petrol engines?

That is a good point, to be honest I didn't read the OP very well as I didn't even notice the 2L and down until a second reading.
Porsche and Mercedes have some special 2.0's at the moment.
Mercedes latest 1.6 is fairly pokey as well. I am fairly confident it would win the best 1.6 category at the moment. Porsche and Mercedes have some special 2.0's at the moment.

I’m going to throw the Jaguar V8 into the ring.
It’s a solid, modern reliable engine that sounds and goes well.
It also pretty much redefined Jaguar. They used to be synonymous with the I6 or V12. Now, when you think of Jaguar, you think of that V8!
It’s also been used in other brands in the group. Aston Martins, Range Rover, Fords.

Would that be the one with Nikasil liners issue or perhaps the more modern 5.0 with timing chain problems? It’s a solid, modern reliable engine that sounds and goes well.
They do sound good but I wouldn’t call them bullet proof.

The 3.0 flat 6 in my Outback is IMO the best all-round engine I've driven, but I couldn't nominate Subaru for their petrol engines generally as the 2.5 4cyl they've persisted with for far too long is, by many accounts, a bit of a dog. Think I'd go for Toyota/Lexus - from big (e.g. the LS V8s), to small (e.g. the many variations on the 1.33 VVTi), they just don't know how to make a bad petrol engine.

Honda's K20 isn't a bad engine.
8k RPM, can take a fk tonne of abuse. Breathing Mods can do 250hp, and boosted can take double the standard output (and then some) on standard internals and still take a bashing and not break.
They like a drink, and need regular oil top ups.
As much as I love my Honda's. They cannot take double power output on standard internals. Not reliably for any considerable length of time.8k RPM, can take a fk tonne of abuse. They do break and when they do its either rebuild or new engine time. Boosted K20s (standard internals), love throwing rods out of the block and stripping 4th gear (in particular).
A fantastic engine though if left NA.

That said, any company that sells a 90 degree V6 with the same block as the V8 and petrol and diesels as thoroughly below average as the Ingeniums has no place on a list of great engine builders.
