That is a good point, to be honest I didn't read the OP very well as I didn't even notice the 2L and down until a second reading.
Porsche and Mercedes have some special 2.0's at the moment.
Mercedes latest 1.6 is fairly pokey as well. wink I am fairly confident it would win the best 1.6 category at the moment.

Drive a Honda f20c in anger for 25000 miles and any other engine this side of a Ferrari seems very civilian.

There might be engines that pull harder or sound better. But 9000rpm redline, 237hp and very good reliability make it a great lump.

I’m going to throw the Jaguar V8 into the ring.

It’s a solid, modern reliable engine that sounds and goes well.

It also pretty much redefined Jaguar. They used to be synonymous with the I6 or V12. Now, when you think of Jaguar, you think of that V8!

It’s also been used in other brands in the group. Aston Martins, Range Rover, Fords.

Would that be the one with Nikasil liners issue or perhaps the more modern 5.0 with timing chain problems?

They do sound good but I wouldn’t call them bullet proof.

From experience

Under 1ltr - Suzuki

1.4 - 2ltr - Honda

2 - 3.5ltr BMW

4lt - Lexus

4lt + LS

The LS is probably one of the best engines ever in terms of reliability

Lots of other engines used Nikasil liners and suffered the same issues, not sure it makes any sense to single out Jaguar on this one. And besides, the issues with the liners was not due to the engine, but the fuel quality. Which is why they quickly changed to steel liners.

The 3.0 flat 6 in my Outback is IMO the best all-round engine I've driven, but I couldn't nominate Subaru for their petrol engines generally as the 2.5 4cyl they've persisted with for far too long is, by many accounts, a bit of a dog. Think I'd go for Toyota/Lexus - from big (e.g. the LS V8s), to small (e.g. the many variations on the 1.33 VVTi), they just don't know how to make a bad petrol engine.

For the smaller engines say 1.0-2.0L it has to be Honda Surely?

The Engine from the S2000 for example is said to be one of the most powerful NA 4 cylinder engines ever fitted to a production car.

Honda's K20 isn't a bad engine.

8k RPM, can take a fk tonne of abuse. Breathing Mods can do 250hp, and boosted can take double the standard output (and then some) on standard internals and still take a bashing and not break.

They like a drink, and need regular oil top ups.
As much as I love my Honda's. They cannot take double power output on standard internals. Not reliably for any considerable length of time.

They do break and when they do its either rebuild or new engine time. Boosted K20s (standard internals), love throwing rods out of the block and stripping 4th gear (in particular).

A fantastic engine though if left NA.

The port injected 4.2 seems to be the best incarnation in terms of robustness, although the issues with the earlier 4.0 are a little overegged. Usually takes Jaguar 10 years or so to sort out any new engine hehe It is a good engine though, and an easier thing to own than the oil pissing fault ridden BMW N62 by all accounts.

That said, any company that sells a 90 degree V6 with the same block as the V8 and petrol and diesels as thoroughly below average as the Ingeniums has no place on a list of great engine builders.
