Driving is a privilege, not a right, so they don't care a fk if you can afford it or not.

As far as the insurer is concerned, last time you were driving you were pissed, so every chance of causing a crash that costs them many many thousands, or even millions, in payout. Why should they take on a high risk? I’m not trying to be preachy, just saying it how the insurer sees it.

Two year ban I'm guessing a high reading? Do you have to do any type of medical before getting your licence back?

Sorry for being nosey and if you'd rather not say!
Yeah it was 92mg of breath - I think it was 2.5 times the limit so was told i was a high risk offender and will have to do a medical and retake my test before I get my license back.

If you blow over 100mg you will required to take a medical in order to get your licence back to prove you are not a raging alcoholic!!

For a 2year ban it is likely the OP blew dam close to that.

Op, we're you offered a course to reduce the ban? If so make sure insurers know this.

For insurance, try Admiral.
Thanks for the info, Yes will have to do that medical but dont really mind. I am starting Army training in January sp should be super fit by then.

No didnt know or got told about a course. What does that do?

You can spend the time learning how to spell licence.

Its not to see how fit you are, but to make sure you aren't alcohol or drug dependent.

Course isn't offered to everyone, will be down to the courts to decide if they feel it's appropriate. Will get you some time off your ban (I think a quarter if i remember rightly).

Not as strange as catching a bus or riding a bike for that matter. I've not done either for about 20 years!

Regarding insurance hit, I had a 20 month ban reduced to 16 for attending a drink drive awareness course, 11 or 12 years ago. Insurance went from circa £750 a year to just shy of £5k in the first year back in a car. Dropped by around a grand each year over the next few years.

Interestingly I know somebody that got banned 6yrs ago for drink drive, not myself.. When they came to get their insurance following the ban it made zero difference premium was same as before.

Odd considering someone crashed into my car whilst it was safely parked and admitted fault yet my insurer still loaded my policy

That's how insurance works.

If something has happened before, then it could happen again.

I believe they base it on the length of ban and size of the fine - for instance the effect on mine was negligible due to a 9 month ban and £180 fine, however I suspect if you have to have a medical and take your test again before returning, you may not be so lucky.

I got banned for 18 months for drink driving in 2006. My insurance went up by around £40 per year! I insured through Adrian Flux IIRC.

Driving after the ban certainly felt weird at first but soon felt like I'd never been off the road. It's like riding a bike...

i had 28 day ban for speeding and insurance only went up by a couple of hundred pounds. But i do drive more carefully now. Thinking of going on, over 70's refresher course and want to see their face when I turn up in my RS. Only thing that p****d me off was police who stopped me making such a thing of driving a RS. Called up to radar operator, how fast was that ""RS"" in loud voice and parked his car so RS badge was staring us in the face.

Must admit I agree. I don't want to change the topic of this thread but I don't think the punishment is severe enough. There is no excuse for it. A relative of mine was drunk driving home one night and clipped a cyclist on her way home. She died of her injuries and the relative got 11 years for it. Family lost their 24 year old daughter just because someone thought they were ok to drive, or wouldn't get caught.

So without meaning to sound patronising I do hope those reading this thread take something away from it as the consequences can be life changing.

OP - you can ignore the high horse riders as it’s not that bad at all!

Once your ban is over, contact a decent broker who will be able to sort out insurance for you at a reasonable rate!

Considering I'm 4 years into driving now and have paid £11k for insurance over the years, yeah 5k for insurance after getting caught drink driving isnt fking high enough.
