This is factually incorrect. If a unique engine, homologation for 1300cc rallying and a unique interior and exterior (including the body package) constitutes a trim level, then things like the GT3RS and Speciale fall under that umbrella. Charitably, it seems you’re either confusing it with the UK version or you simply don’t like it (which would be fine). But your comment suggests you don’t know these cars or haven’t read the article.

You are wrong. The UK one was, the lhd European one was certainly not a trim level.

Have a look on Wikipedia, interesting.

Some of the highlights are that over 30,000 of the lhd versions were made. The engine was a bored out version of the 1.1. Weight was saved by taking out soundproofing and ‘electrics’ apparently.

The uk version was apparently a rebadged XT. The Germans got a 1.9 version which sold in very low numbers and didn’t have much more power.

I owned a 1.6 gti and a modded (mainly adjustable suspension) xt. Both great fun.

I'm lucky enough to own a Euro Rallye and a 1.9GTi. GTis are great, but Rallyes are special. It always makes me laugh when people comment on them negatively when they've never actually seen one, let alone driven one.

Most of the cars built have been rallied, abused or crashed. That's why finding cars with no cage ever having been fitted and in good condition are extremely rare and therefore valuable. My car is completely original but still gets used - even in winter. I bought it to enjoy it. I am lucky enough to get to drive lots of exciting cars, but nothing touches this for fun.

That’s lovely, and I completely agree. I own some other somewhat interesting cars (including a 1.9 GTi like yourself), and the Rallye is the one I keep returning to for the quality and rawness of the driving experience. It’s easy to have opinions about something of which you have no educated experience, but I’m pretty certain that given the opportunity, the merits of the car would demonstrate why it’s held in such high regard.

I’m the “mug” selling these for my friend having helped drive them over from his home in Granada in Spain to mine in Hertfordshire and I have to say that I started the journey as bit of sceptic in terms of whether they were as much fun as Mr Harris said they were ... given the power output... but I must admit to being a convert now and sorely tempted to jettison one of my other cars to buy one as a keeper. They appeal because of the rawness and simplicity but also that old school noise and seat of your pants drive that you just don’t get in more modern and mechanically complex cars. As others have said they are completely different to the UK and German ones, and don’t knock them if you haven’t tried them. The cheaper one (a 1989 series 1) should be UK registered and advertised early in New Year, just in case Santa has left anyone an IOU.
