Love the way these look and whilst 15 years ago these were still the cutting edge of all wheel drive performance, a modern Golf R or S3 will run rings around one of them AND give you 40 mpg on a motorway run.

Not for me anymore, but then we all grow up over time.
In what way would a modern car "run rings around them" ? Only possibly due to a boring auto gearbox if fitted.

When you say "we all grow up over time", I find this a bit of a sad attitude to take. If I ever grow up so much that I don't still want a scooby I'd imagine I've gotten so old that I no longer want to drive.

I haven't got one anymore but if I didn't already have 3 cars and had room for another toy this would certainly be on the list and I'm 37. I can't imagine that at 57 I wouldn't feel the same.

Have you actually driven one?

pretty much sums up how I feel about my EVO V, just a shame I can't drive mine over the darker months due to their tendency to rust.

No we don’t. I’m 42 and have 2 Imprezas in my garage (not my Pistonheads garage)

You can keep your dull German white goods smile
Too right, i'm 40 and have just bought one, had plenty of German 4x4 hatches (S3's etc) and i'm not sure I agree with the 'running rings' i'm afraid, definitely more comfortable and refined but i'm not sure I've ever had a car that eats B-roads like this...

I went from a e90 m3 . To a hawkeye wrx sti . Not regretting it one bit . The driver involvement in the Subaru even at low speeds is fun .
Would you mind elaborating a bit?

I quite fancy an Impreza, but need a car that can take a family of five. Fortunately, before Subaru lost the plot, they transplanted the WRX gubbins into the Gen5 Liberty...

It’s not as solid or spritely as the WRX but it is fun cross country and just feels right to drive.

WRX is on the shortlist as a replacement for Mrs PB’s Golf. And I’m only 46...

I love everything about your car Ben, from the rally blue exterior shade to the driving experience it offers to the sound it makes. Good on you for picking up one of the nicest examples around and I agree that there is nothing quite like it at any price in today's market. Happy motoring with your special scooby!]
That's great to hear, thank you! I always enjoy reading about all of your experiences, and very interesting to see how some of you think they measure up to BMW M cars.

Another mod to consider: Do some research on the snorkel delete. Some people say it messes with the airflow meter, and can lose you a few HP. It definitely increases induction noise, which you may consider worth the hit.
I'll take a look into that, thanks thumbup

I loved my Scooby, what great cars. I haven't driven the non-widetrack dccd STi of this generation so would be interested to hear if there is as much noticeable difference as the price suggests.
I'd be interested to find out too, perhaps I need to find someone with one to do a twin test. From what I've read though you only really feel the difference when you're driving really hard on the road or on track, so the actual day to day difference is probably negligible. Although I do prefer the wheels on the widetrack version and you can't discount the bragging rights of having a DCCD button hehe

More threads like this on PH please. You can really feel that driving the car is a hobby and huge enjoyment for you - the way you write about how it drives is great.

I remember being a passenger in one of these with Prodrive extras. The way it used to go down B roads was exceptional.

Well I haven’t been brave enough to touch the DCCD wheel on mine in nearly 2 years of ownership!

The only DCCD Subarus I've driven were early STi-RA classics, fantastic things. The directness of turn-in and neutrality through the corner with DCCD open (ie rear-biased) was incredible compared to a regular WRX or Legacy GT. They didn't have the auto DCCD mode back then though.

I had a hawk sti lightly modified to 350bhp for two years that I loved! Used daily and many track days and not a think went wrong with it despite the 2.5 horror stories. Sold it for a c63 which was an all round better car but not as entertaining and despite the sti being 100bhp down somehow felt faster having all the power come in at once on boost, need to watch the speedo to see how fast the c63 is as seems to hide it well.

Age ! What's that got to do with owning a scoobie brought mine at 51 and this weekend fitting a K&N cold air filter to it !
These sort of cars keep your heart young :-)
Well that's the theory

I love an older Impreza but that exhaust does sound a bit apologetic.

I have a manual Golf R with a short shifter, mapped to 370+ bhp and yes it’s more comfortable, economical and possibly faster than the STi and makes a much better daily. So obviously it’s the better drive?

No. I’ve owned 2 STis (a Wr1 and an rb320) and both had far more character and sense of occasion than the golf. I wouldn’t have one as a daily now but as an all year round weekend toy for the money, they’re very tough to beat.

Comment was from a stereotypical German white goods fanboy, Subaru have immense driving heritate and the Subaru cars have real drive engagement and satisfaction, even for old men of 40+ dare i say.!

far too many people are blinded by German cars in England, i said it a few times and its pretty sad if anything - the hordes you see each time you got out on a run (relative to seeing a Subaru) gets depressing if anything

Really struggling to understand the ''driver engagement'' comments, my widetrack sti ppp was probably the most un-engaging and un-involving car I've ever driven... competent to the point of being boring.

It was characterful in other ways, but definitely not in terms of actual driver engagement.
