Oh, for god's sake. The GT86 is a cut price white elephant. It's slow, cheap and, well, not very popular for a reason.

Comparing it to a GT4 is like saying Pat Butcher is better than Camaron Diaz, once the lights are off.

One has to ask could possibly be that you chaps just cant drive properly ? , have driven an MX-5 and in context it seemed nice enough in context but not quite as anazing as people say , havent driven a gt86 so cant comment, sports cars and saving money isnt that an oxymoron
I've driven an MX5, a GT86, owned a vvc mgf which I preferred to the MX5, still own an Elise which is used as a daily and hugely more entertaining than a gt86.
I've not driven an m2 or Caymen GT4 but last summer had a 1m to enjoy, which is probably not too far removed. The 1m is a massively fast enjoyable car in a completely different way from the small jap cars mentioned and I would love to own one.
Why on pistonheads do we need to read on the first page MX5 and GT86. Really it's like a broken record.

GT4 is amazing and deserves all the praise heaped upon it, but isn’t daily usable with those bucket seats unless you’re an 18 year old gymnast. M2C shades it on comfort and practicality. Both epic. Great article. Happy Christmas.
I'd assumed I'd take the seats out and fit normal Porsche seats. Keep the 918 buckets at the back of the garage should I ever want to sell it on.

Are you shagging a GT86? It's an OK car but it ain't no Porsche. It's just a bit of cheap fun.

Yep its all rather dull. Some people like their own cars to the point where they feel the need to mention them in every thread.

The older I get, the less reason I see for all these 400+bhp cock-mobiles on the roads in the UK.
No driver with average skills can drive one safely while actually using the power properly, never mind legally.

And I am getting fed up with having Mr Superb-right-headlights 3 feet from my tail at 70 at night on any dual carrigeway you care to mention, just because i decided to use the German lane for more than 10 seconds and he has an M3/RS6/C63.

Suggest to them that they take their £60grand cock-mobile on a track to really enjoy it safely and they turn tail and run.
Yet, as said earlier in this thread, it is the only place where it is actually safe to use that power.
They should try it some time - my TVR comes alive on a track, it is what it was designed for.
130 on the Bentley Straight at Snetterton is fun. 130 on the M1 is just dangerous.
What utter crap. I own both, and track them both
You will see loads of M2s and Gt4s on track nowadays.. probably far more than TVRs,
I did about 6 track days this year and saw loads - I only saw 1 TVR -
TBH 400bhp is not a lot in 1300- 1500 kg car. and probably about right nowadays.
It’s true though. For the most part the owners of M2 type cars will have no interest in taking it on a track and will probably only open it up on a motorway.
And far less tvr owners will take theirs on track. As lovely as they are they can’t handle much pootling round town without something going wrong never mind being thrashed around a track. A lot of people don’t want/ can’t afford to buy/run/ maintain multiple cars (me included) so will buy something that can do both and the likes of an m2/gt4 etc are a perfect prefect balance imo.

Really?
Can't see them being a problem. I have an m135i which has basically the same engine, same brakes etc. Some upgraded pads and it's done me fine for many trackdays ! :-)
then i shall bow to your real world knowledge beer
whenever i see newish M cars on track they do seem to melt tyres and brakes, and often have to leave after lunch. this maybe because they're inexperienced drivers over-driving the car and even leaving esc on to exacerbate wear?
The older M cars of the "E" generation did have very crap brakes.
The brakes on the newer F series of car are much better - pretty much all have 4 piston front and 2 piston rear
Obviously stock pads can and do fade but that's the payoff for low noise and vibration etc.
But for road they are perfect.

Plenty of options for upgrading from £150 to £400 (I went with Pagid RS29)

Of course. I've taken both on track, too. Pat Butcher is very heavy on the brakes.

On brakes, I would say for road use I had no issue with the standard brakes on an e39 M5.

You'd have to be driving incredibly hard for it to be an issue on the road.

Ha, Ha

Back on topic (sort of), I've wondered for a while, how much better is the Cayman GT4, than the 987 Cayman R? The R won quite a few awards when it came and out and you can pick one of those up for under £40K....so about half the price of a GT4....

Anyone on here owned or driven both who could offer an opinion? I still think in some ways the Cayman R is the best looking Cayman they ever made.....

Another fun article would be the Cayman R vs the BMW 1M. They were both rivals in 2011 and I think the Cayman is the cheaper car now...

Over the last three years I've gone from NC2 MX5 > Lotus Elise Cup > Boxster 981 and although they are all fab I still think that MX5 was the most fun on the road.

Okay the sound of the the 981 is epic, I mean with PSE it truly is just that, however I got the base Boxster hoping it wouldn't be too powerful for spirited road use but the gearing is so long that to wind it out in third is driving licence threatening.

I keep looking at the new ND MX5, and thinking with a bit of BBR fettling, not through forced induction, but the more traditional NAsp works, plus suspension, brakes and freer flowing exhaust and I'd have a more enjoyable road going. That alongside a Caterham for trackdays would just be my ideal.

Plus the new ND MX5 in the right colour, and not in RF guise, is a rather well proportioned pretty little thing.

Just be careful of that - test drive for sure! Going back to an older car you thought was brilliant at the time can be a disappointment. At least in my experience.

he meant the latest MX, he still has an old one.
nasp fettle the latest version (and suspension) and i agree that miata really is the answer. complemented with a boring 2L barge for mway.

real answer to this debate is a Merc Sprinter van with a Caterham in the back. 1500kg doesn't make a good road going sports car.

I think that would just reinforce the Porsche victories over the 1M from 2011 in EVO and Autocar ( unless you need 4 seats )

Great.

lets move on from talking about the toyota and back to the cars that were reviewed.
