Am I alone in liking the Ateca? Probably, but I don't care.

Yes I know I could get an equivalent lower riding, lighter, better-centre-of-gravity hatchback for the same money, but I'm not trying to knock two-tenths off my commute in the morning or pull 2g round the Tesco roundabout.

I want something that's not going to rip it's arse out over potholes and speed bumps but has some poke when I'm in the mood.

Should funds allow, I'd have a Macan Turbo for example.
The only major dislike for me is the styling with the bronze/gold. Other than that I prefer it to Alfa's current designs tbh

The Stelvio probably isn’t a car you buy with your head, or one you buy to keep up with the Jones’s.
Its just another SUV. I have no issue with them if thats what people want. They are bought by the same sort of people for the same sorts of reasons as every other SUV.
Agree with this 100%. They're not my thing, but they're plenty of people's things. A lifestyle choice, if you like. Just that some will spend £70k, some £45k, and some considerably less. Neither me nor Mrs F do a school run any more, so there's possibly less allure than for some.

One is a bland suv, the other is a Seat, which always look bland.
You better ride a Ducati V4R to work in the summer, and drive a Caterham 620 in the winter to call the Alfa bland - and I say that as someone who is no fan of SUVs

Well done that man! SUVs get a lot of stick on here, but this seems to have character by the bucket load
indeed, there is still hope for us out there that not everyone is buying BMWs, even if Alfas have flawed paint jobs that only BMW can perfect

Having had a 300+bhp Yeti in the past, I like the Ateca - only got rid of the Yeti because I wanted more boot space.

To me it’s more about the dealer network and the terrible reviews you hear of the aftersales.

All cars depreciate but I get a feeling a 3 year old X3 M40i would be a lot easier to shift than a 3 year old stelvio and retain a lot more money, hence, I’d never sink 60-70k into one. I guess if you can afford the hit or not worry about part ex values, then yeah.

Who would want a 3 year old 510 bhp complicated Alfa out of warranty?
Meh, you can get a two year aftermarket warranty for less than £700 which will cover everything that would be covered on the dealer warranty and you can keep renewing it up to the car being 10 years old. It's the logical thing to do for any aging car.

These warranty's are no more expensive for Alfas than for BMW.

I like both of these tbh. The Alfa is mental and anyone who sinks 70k+ of their own into one gets my respect. I personally would take the Ateca and remap it and then buy a Nomad with the change.

Happy New Year all.

I would rather have a Sportwagon one of those. Sadly, Alfa don't make it.

So would I, but I live in rural Perthshire and have two dogs so the superior visibility on country roads, 4wd grip in the winter and additional practicality mean that Stelvio would suit me better and that has nothing to do with the school run.
The BMW would not get a look in and there is no reason to believe that it would be any more reliable or hold its value better.

Quick Dad-vans on stilts are not cool. Doesn't matter what badge, how much carbon fibre is around the cup holder or how "surprisingly fast" they are in a straight line.

Nope.

Buying a car because you think it’s cool, or ruling something out because you think it isn’t cool ... Is surely the most uncool thing ever?

Well after making the trip down to Edinburgh from aberdeen to see the Ateca Cupra yesterday and I can’t believe I am going to state the de rigour PistonHeads comment, but for 37k for a comfort and sound pack seat no matter what badge is stuck on it just simply crazy but even more so for a design pack like this one at 41k !!!!!! , think what else you could buy ................ there I said it .

Before going down I was sent a video of the car and it looked unusual but in the flesh for me something just doesn’t click , but the interior just looks like it’s straight out a base model standard Leon with nothing to try and make it special.

Where are you? I spend 4 months a year in Glenlyon - beyond Killin (A84, Stirling - Crianlarich road). Be good to go for a hoon if you’re local.

Never a better time to be having a mid life crisis with kids. Glad they're just shoving the Cupra badge on anything now, oh sorry, Cupra "brand".

Love love love the Stelvio and Giulia. Went to the dealer to select my spec of Giulia Super, left the place horrified because of the orange peel FACTORY paintjob. Ended up with a 3 series instead. If Alfa could get their sh£t together quality wise they would be killing it with the current rwd models.
Orange peel, o my dear, you sound like a little girl not getting her manicure.

Who cares. I'd say nothing better than orange, but hey, that might be me.

The new 3 series by the way looks like a Lexus. How are you going to peel that off...;)
3 series always a very competent performer, but hardly one you choose with the heart.
& orange peel is a standard BMW option, has been for years.
And often new Ferraris too, but then Alfa/Ferrari either must share the same 'paint' shop or the same decorators. Awful stuff at times.
