Why do PH insist on regurgitating this Autocar bks?

Absolutely no chance this will be RWD or have a 6 cylinder engine. Flagship will be AWD and have a 4-cyl turbo.

M-lite will be called M235i GC and they might make a full M version with 400bhp to match the RS3 Saloon and upcoming CLA45.

Not sure I understand this niche, if they are filling a niche please do a M3 estate!

If they run this along side a M3 (which I can’t see why because there was never a M4 GC) then why would anyone bother with the M3?

The new M3 will be bigger so this M2 GC will probably be a pretty straight swap power wise and cheaper so I’ll take the M2 GC.

I think BMW will loose out on sales of the mid range M cars if this is released.
M3 estate or at the very least a proper 1M hatchback. Don't want a bloody SUV!

If they do produce an M2GC, a 1M hatch would be a relatively easy thing to add to the range since it'll essentially be the same car with the boot lopped off.

This is very poor from PH, I definitely didn’t expect PH to even consider this as a possibility.

Very poor article with lots of speculation and baseless facts. Even the use of the older N55 engine to not step on the M2C’s toes, none of it makes sense!

All I see is photos of a 2 series GC/1 series saloon, probably a 3 cylinder diesel model.

I’ve completely lost track of all the different BMW models now available. Along with Audi and Mercedes these aspirational brands are everywhere.
Will they ever lose this shine, and will other smaller volume quality brands step in if you genuinely want something a bit different to everyone else?

I gave the "artists impression" the same front wheel position as the test car... eww. vomit

I don't think there is much 'shine' anymore from the lower end of the BMW / Mercedes / Audi lineup, if there ever realistically was.

Will people still buy an A3 over a Skoda, of course, a 1 series despite it being a FWD mini with a different shell, absolutely - Driving 'German' is an absolute necessity to many young people now.

As for this new model - how many more cars with tiny differences from each other do we need? Is this really capturing market share? People have to drive something, if the micro-niche wasn't available they would just drive a close alternative rather than being sold both a problem and a solution in a car.

PH - don't know why all the excitement .
There could be an M2 GC yes. But the new 2 series will be based on the same chassis as the 1. Ie FWD with transverse engine.
So IF there is an M2 GC, it will have a transverse four cyl. Turbo with a haldex based 4wd drivetrain.
Hardly something to get excited about considering what it's replacing.

Yes well said. Loosing the inline 6 , longitudinal engine mount and rwd is a big shame.

I’ve had Audi’s and currently a Merc for the past 15 years. But next car will not be German, they’ve lost that exclusiveness which made them special. Plus the build quality is becoming overrated, when compared against “lesser” brands.

1. Because PH is owned by the same company as Autocar

2. Because it's easy

In which case, why don’t they call it a 1 series saloon?

I’m not against BMW making more cars to satisfy every niche however it just wouldn’t be right to have 2 cars labelled the same name but with completely different underpinnings, sure they’re already doing that with the 2 series active tourer etc but they’re not marketed as the same car or even similar. A FWD 2 series GranCoupe will be pointless if it doesn’t have the same drivetrain as the coupe. Would be better if it’s the 1 series saloon.

I'm sure the huge majority of buyers (2-series GC buyers, not M2GC buyers) couldn't care less what drivetrain/platform the car has. BMW are calling it a 2-series because they can sell it for more if it's called a 2-series.

More likely this is a new 1series saloon/gran coupe.
Based on the new fwd platform.

M2 gran coupe ?
Don’t make me laugh, even Bmw aren’t stupid enough to dilute the
Success they’ve achieved with the M2 coupe.

And another thing......front caliper positioning.......FWD.

Over and out.

I thought the same thing... The 2 series range can be left for the (relatively) small RWD coupe style cars (M2, M240i etc.)

Rename the 2 Series Active Tourer to 1 Series Active Tourer. The 1 range can then be the practical four door, fwd (mostly) cars.

But then that would be far too simple for BMW.

It's nothing to do with stupid and everything to do with profits. Re-engineering the car to fiil an even smaller niche would mean the numbers simply won't add up. It's nice to think about not diluting the brand but that is secondary to making money.
