I recently bought a B6 A4 after investigating the cost of a set of winter tyres for my BMW 530i. I was quite pleased to pick up a 2003 2.5 TDi quattro saloon with 10 months MOT and a cambelt change done a year ago for £600. No more economical than my BMW though !

PDi? You mean PD TDI? Probably one of the best diesel engines ever made. Even in an Alhambra it felt like a strong engine.

Yes apologies, meant PD. It was better than many of the terrible diesel engines that came before but let's not lionise it, it was rough as hell and had a tiny powerband.

That jerk as it came on boost convinced people who were only used to wheezy NASP petrol engines that it was a lot more powerful than it is, which is fun and gives a great perception of speed, but the talk of 130bhp passats "pulling like a train" and "going like a rocket" are laughable.

I tried to buy a 3 litre Avant Quattro recently but I didn't have much time and the two available seemed expensive - "They're rare, mate." Settled for a 1.8T in the end. 180bhp. It's fine.

What an absolutely stupid comment.

So an S4 is a poor man's RS4 is it??
Of course it's the poorer man's RS4!! Said as the owner of the lowliest of the low SE versions I'd consider myself grateful if someone pi**ed on me if I were on fire being such a lowly poor commoner!! (Not white or on PCP so at least I've got that going for me lol) getmecoat

I had one of these as a company car in 2002, at the end of the lease I bought it due to the low mileage.

During the time I had it as a company car my wife ran our classic Impreza STi, they both did 22mpg, but the Impreza was on a whole different level performance wise. The Audi wasn't very quick, certainly not to warrant the amount of petrol I put in it (paid for by the company though).

My wife then ran this and I had a Forester XT, both cars had winter tyres on them, but the Audi was poor due to very little ground clearance when you got it on snow. The Forester was brilliant (and also much quicker than the Audi).

It went through 3 sets of coil packs whilst I had it. First 2 sets under warranty, the third I paid for.

Once it got to 3 years old it went in to the garage every other month for small annoying faults to be fixed.

But the worst thing by far was dealing with Audi dealers for servicing.

I didn't find it that rough really, thought if you drove it right then it did pull pretty hard, in fact when I had my Alhambra, I thought how I'd quite like to try a Fabia vRS with the PD130.

Oh I forgot, it's the internet, leave opinions at the door. I'd say you're the minority there, cause the o pinon generally is that it's the best diesel engine ever made.

Am I lucky or you unlucky? I had two Audi 80 Quattros and I'm now on my second B6 Quattro and I've had so little trouble with any of them. I wonder if it's because I buy them a bit older? Maybe I buy them when all the faults have been sorted out.

I bought a 6 year old B7 quattro Avant with up to date Audi service history from it's first owner. When the next minor service was due I went into the dealership. The service adviser clocked my T-shirt, jeans and trainers and couldn't have been less interested, I never went back.

Indeed. I've had 1.9 TDi PD's as my daily drivers since 2006. Absolutely love the hassle-free motoring they bring to the table.

Anyone who thinks the PD engine is a rattly smoky tractor lump obviously has never had the pleasure of 70's,80's designed car diesels. Only the PSA XUD was anywhere near what could be called refined before electronic controlled direct injection diesels became the norm. The AVF/AWX 130PD engine is considered the best of all because it gives the power and economy of modern diesels with the bulletproof reliability and dependability of the old school diesels. Just keep changing the PD oil and filters and they'll run and run. Mine has done 182k. Did 1400 miles to Bordeaux last September, 75mph average gave 54mpg. These diesel haters should be made to pay for their own fuel on a £25k annual wage and see how long it takes them to convert to diesel. Petrol is cleaner but you are using almost twice as much of it so is it really the better option?

I may've upset some Audi showroom staff when I walked straight in and between their desks to get to the parts counter. They could have had a side door so plebs can get to the parts desk without having to tarnish their showroom ambience. Because my money is worth less than other money.

Wrong, I've owned or driven most of these, plus most other normal 4cyl diesels over the years.
The PD engine is tough, economical, goes ok yes but it is a nasty horrible rattling tractor engine.
You can put it in a Golf, Polo, Passat, Sharron etc, its still as rough as f*** tractor engine, there is zero pleasure to be had from running around in one of these (apart from avoiding regular trips to the petrol station).

Maybe if you are deaf, wearing noise cancelling head phones and have a total lack of any sensory feel in your body you might think a PD is nice to drive.

Lets not ruin an interesting SOTW talking about tractor engines, this one has a lovely smooth revvy petrol V6, not good for 20k miles a year but for a cheap shed doing low miles its amazing value.

Another reason for going for one of these over the B6 S4 is they've got three radiators. More to go wrong.

And they're not in the SoTW £1500 limit.

Nice shed. I ran a 2002 A6 3.0 quattro from 2003 - 2005 which I chose over a VW Passat W8 estate. Economy was rarely out of the twenties, and even on a long run from Aberdeen to Tavistock I struggled to see north of 30. The gearing was quite low IIRC, even in 6th, which meant the revs were always a bit higher than you'd expect when cruising at 80-ish, which certainly didn't help. Thankfully I had a company fuel card.
The coil packs were all replaced not long after purchase, and it was the first car I fitted winter tyres to, leaving the ground clearance as its only liability in the snow when I was off the beaten track in rural Aberdeenshire.

Had one of these with the 2.0FSi engine which cost me 950 with 110k on it. Smooth as butter and probably the most refined car I've ever owned (coming from my ZR that wasn't hard!) but within a couple of day I noticed the power steering fluid was leaking badly. Needed a new rack, costing 500 notes.

Was going to get it fitted when it went into limp mode one morning and I just gave up with it. It was something simple no doubt (throttle bodies clogging and coil packs were common) but I'd lost the will with it.

Shame as it's probably my favourite car I've owned, but I've just been put off now.
