Yeah I nearly bought this car a few years ago.
It's owned by a nice old chap who unfortunately suffers from an illness and his daughter was involved in selling.
Last time it was featured it was on Facebook too and the daughter was subject to all sorts of snide abuse and she was really upset about it - she was very apprehensive talking to me at first but she was a kind person who loved her dad.
The did appear to be some paint issues and rumour of a pre delivery accident but the owner has nothing to do with any of it and the accidient rumour has no conclusive proof either.
I wish them all the best with the sale and hopefully it goes through for good money.
Was it the one that was posted on here with someone asking how to go about selling it etc? It's owned by a nice old chap who unfortunately suffers from an illness and his daughter was involved in selling.

What's the story behind it, did he buy as an investment or just forget about it or did he get ill 28 years ago? Really curious when stuff like this pops up

Mine, back in May 1997:
It was a 3 door phase 2, 1990. I brought it to the UK a few times, and remember seeing so many 5 door 309 GTI's. You literally didn't see them anywhere else, so there must have been demand for them in the UK at the time.
I've often thought about buying another one, but I do look back on mine with rose tinted glasses, forgetting about the quirky 185/55-15 tyres, it's ability to tramline like crazy despite several attempts at alignment, the incurable misfire in later life, the sunroof that leaked only at the car wash, the complicated interior fan control unit that burned out... yes, of course I would have another one.

They certainly weren’t as elegant as the 205 that I nearly bought - 309s were much cheaper nearly new though
Amazing, I was just talking about my old one yesterday. Fond memories of my red phase 1 3 door non sunroof/ e windows..
We were talking about his Suzuki Swift Sport and how the stated power belies the way it delivers and I cast my mind back to my 309 gti.
It had days when it seemed to went faster ‘than it had a right to’ as a friend put it.
I put it on a weight scale once and showed 910kg .. can’t be much in it with a 205 1.9..?
It did feel very light on it’s feet, handled amazingly and felt like a road rally car at times with that lumpy torquey and revvy motor. I used to wonder if a previous owner had changed the cams!
Would love to drive a sorted one again.

Looks a cracking buy to me, even with some doubtful elements. I'm not sure I'd be too worried about using it either, despite the low miles. I mean, you'd only choose to have one of these as a toy these days, surely, so it would still probably remain low miles in comparison to everything else out there.
I could have replaced my first car, a 205 Roland Garros, with a 5-door 309 Goodwood that had an Mi-16 in it. I think I balked at stretching to £1500 and ended up paying half that for a Mk2 Golf GTI instead that lasted about 6 months. Idiot!
