STE 4K doesn't mean anything though.
It reads as "steak", which I thought was pretty good as a) it wasn't altered and b) it was on a Cumbrian meat lorry IIRC.

OK, so "steak" doesn't contain the number "4" or have a space in the middle. HAM 1 might have been acceptable.

Quite right too - that's exactly where it belongs.

Anybody with a reading age around five or above will know for sure you can't spell words using a mixture of numbers and letters.

I've always thought the very "best" plates are those that need not be altered or doctored in any way, for example STE 4K, as opposed to STE4K or using strategically placed screws to "suggest" that 11 becomes H or 5 becomes 6 and so on.

If I were OP, for the sake of £20 I'd just have a legal set of plates made up for the MOT day. That way, no questions and the likelihood of being pulled over by plod really is minimal nowadays.

As a slightly separate note, I have a long ish commute (50 miles each way), to help with the monotony of the journey I now try to keep an eye out for the "best" plate I see that day. Criteria only stipulate that it must be legal, no mis-spacing, no strategic screws etc. Usually the winner is a dateless plate with five or less characters. That being said, I usually disqualify the two letters/two numbers format given how common they seem to be.
Don't remember the last time I saw a plate with 2 letters and 2 numbers. Pretty rare round there parts.
I saw 2 this morning. A few single letter with one or two number digits as well.

It's either harsh or fair.

It can't be both.

There's a whole thread for people whose lives are so sad and empty that they need to tell others how crap they think their number plates are so why are they starting another one here? No one listening to their pathetic whinging on the other one I guess.

It's R88, followed by an abbreviation of my surname. The first 8 has a plate coloured screw-cap across the middle, so it looks a little more like ROB.

If anyone can't see this is R88 then they're blind. Countless police have seen it and never pulled me, ANPR sure recognised it when I received a speeding ticket, and it's passed it's last 7 MOT's without mention.

Sorry Fermy old chap. Looks nothing like ROB. So it's a no from me. That is probably why you got a ticket. The camera snapped R88.

It does look a bit more 0 from further back, but, based on the argument against misrepresenting a plate, no, I don't think it does. All said it's a £250 plate, not a £2500 one.

The intention of course is to take the piss out of anyone pretending to have a Real Good plate when they very obviously haven't.

No different to doing the same with somebody trying to pass a fake Rolex off as a real one or sticking M badges on a wheezy 4 pot diesel or pretending their suit from Romford market was made in Saville row or smothering themselves in fake tan trying to give everybody the impression they've just got back from a month on a super yacht in the Caribbean.

It's all about the egotism and vanity of pretending to be something you're not.

If you're not guilty of that particular fkuckwittery yourself then you've got absolutely nothing to get upset about. If on the other hand you are, well... bring it on. smile

I disagree. Mine was bought as a bit of fun. I didn't even chose to buy it, it was a present from my Mum. I'm not pretending it's anything other than what it is. Who's going to look at my plate and think 'OMG that so must be £10k!' no one is.

No it's not, it's about not being able to let people live their own lives and instead being a self righteous judgemental bore! Who cares if someone has a fake Rolex, who cares about M badges on the 'wrong' car, just let people do what they want, no one is forcing you to do likewise.

I'm not, but so what if I were? It's not getting upset, it's getting tired of people thinking they know better than others and trying to dictate to them as if they are somehow superior!

If society should allow it's citizens to 'let people do as they want' or 'live and let live', there would be anarchy. We need rules, laws and regulations to maintain the foundations of a democratic society.

Misspaced number plates as highlighted on this and other threads are but a small speck within the boundary of the law. But those specks are then multiplied by other small specks from other stratas of life to create the blott on the landscape that many believe is now closing in on us all.scratchchin
