But not so much now - the 911 is awesome but frankly quite big - the more lithe Cayman (or whatever it's called today) is where my money would go
The 991 911 is exactly the same width mirror to mirror as the 981 Cayman and Boxster.

Like the look of the car, the sound of it and the very idea of an official Porsche entry into the international rally scene once more (regardless of whether a Cayman IS or ISN'T a 911!). Together with the Fiat 124 Abarth and, hopefully, the new Renault Alpine (pretty please, Renault!) I could very happily watch an hour per week of TV coverage of the R-GT class doing its stuff out there on the special stages in international rallying.
Me too!

Used to love watching the iconic blue Subaru in the hands of the mighty Colin M as a teenager before getting my own first car.

Would love to see the GT4 battle against the Alpine, Abarth... maybe Toyota/BMW could throw in a Z4 and GR Supra! Wouldn’t that be fantastic? something for us all to identify a brand and enjoy supporting.

Well done to whoever for using a GT4. Although nobody is allowed to say it... compared to its big brother we all know it’s the better handling sports car!

Sorry Nick!!! Feel free to comment on my views surrounding the Cayman. And you're right, I know anything about the Cayman and in fact, I know so little that I don't really have any views on it. I hear it's a good car though. And this one looks terrific.

And no I didn't. I don't live in the UK so I wasn't allowed, but I wouldn't have done if I were.

Got it. The Cayman is a mid engine version of the 911, and it may even be smaller and lighter. It is also cheaper.

Maybe if were buying, my money would go into one of these, rather than a 911.

Dare I say it, could it be what the 911 should be?

I don't know my Porsches, clearly. For me there is the 911 and nothing else. The Cayman, or whatever it's called has never caught my attention. I wouldn't buy a fake Rolex and to me, this, not being a 911 is a fake Porsche. Please don't argue with me as I'm not saying that this is fact, it's just my opinion. You will have your own. No need to get upset by my comments if you own a Cayman.

But now I'm confused. If I'm correct, this car is a 2+2 flat six. Isn't it therefore a 911?

So a Cayman is a 911, and a 911 is a Cayman. But it's a cheap 911, for those that don't want an expensive 911.

Now I understand. If they called it 911 Low Cost, people wouldn't buy it, so they call it Cayman. Which is like an alligator, but spelt wrong.

Sorry, I can't be the only one thinking the video of the GT3 rally sounds utter crap? Just a load of "warp warp warp" as the car struggles to convert the power into forward motion instead of wheelspin whilst going rather slow.

Surely a 4WD Turbo 911 would be more suited?
That's part of the appeal in a way - battling against the elements in a powerful car. If there were race circuit levels of grip everywhere, rallying wouldn't be nearly so exciting. That being said, there are better videos to demonstrate R-GT...

Something about the R-GT cars that have more appeal than the WRC cars, to me anyway. I remember PH doing an article on the Exige R-GT a few years ago. Shame that this class doesn't get the same coverage as WRC.

Love the Cayman, love this. Slightly surprised to learn that the current 911 is the same width as the Cayman.

The current 911 does have a fat arse though.

I bet those lights are a bit bright on full beam yikes

"I'm not going to argue"......"You are clearly an idiot"....sounds very much like someone that really does want to argue. Please accept my apologies, Mr Angry. I really didn't mean to raise your blood pressure from it's resting level of 160bpm.

I did say that I didn't know my (modern) Porsches. I will have to study them before I attempt to comment.

I really hope that you can forgive me for the offence I have caused you for saying that the Cayman has 2 more seats than it actually has.

Of course, I know it's wrong to describe it as a fake Porsche. It has the same right to wear that coveted badge than anything that's rolled out of Stuttgart but I'm a big fan of aircooled 911s - I have an early 911T awaiting resto, so I tend to cringe at most models that aren't true to the original form.

I briefly owned a 996 GT2, in the early 2000s so I have a little bit of experience of "modern" Porsches. But after test driving a friend's Cerbera, I sold the GT2 and bought a Cerbera for myself. It may have smelt of glue but the GT2 couldn't provide the grin factor that the Cerbera could, it saved me a load of money too. For me, that was when my relationship with new Porsches ended. With hindsight, we all know that the 996 wasn't Porshe's crowning moment. Like everything, they are not what they used to be and for me, that's a bad thing.

I'll admit though that maybe the Cayman requires further investigation. If it's lighter than a 911, and especially if it comes with a manual box (I don't know whether it does), then it sounds like the "911" for me. Not that I'd ever buy a new car again. With age comes wisdom, and I don't have the money.

I'm 50, BTW, in case you hadn't guessed biggrin

As far as I am aware the new (normal) Caymans, and Boxsters can be had with a six speed manual, but the new ones use the Turbo 4 pot, which may not be to some peoples taste.
I did a track day at Silverstone where I could have a go in the full Porsche line up, and the passenger ride I had in the Cayman GT4 was the most memorable (but in fairness a lot of the whole day was) I was being driven by a Porsche Cup racing driver, and even he was going on about how good the Cayman chassis was, Possibly backed up by the fact that we spent most of the time looking at the track through the side windows, with me wondering how in heavens name we were going to get round the next bend. ( Think approaching the bends at truly ridiculous speeds, and then trebling it! smile )

I think a 4wd 911 would have gone even slower as RGT is 2wd only, which is why it's so appealing.

I am confident that if you got a pax ride in a RGT with Mr Dumas you would find it rather fast, even in the snow.

I'd say so. I've only driven the 987, but in my opinion it handled better and was a more enjoyable drive than any 997 below a GT3.
