RE: Mercedes-AMG A35: UK Drive

Unfortunately articles on PH seem to be of a wildly variable standard and are often little more than some of the samey forum replies:
There's no manual (nobody buys manuals)
It's not 20k new (it's not 1992 any more)
Too many electric nannies (Being dead sucks)
Motoring journalists seem to be a bit out of touch with what people want to buy/use/own these days...
A hot hatch should be for driver fun and involvement, practicality, at a sensible price. This is non. An auto hot hatch? Not an involving drive. My Nans Metro Vanden Plas was auto, this is just as exciting. It may be practical, but it's hardly at a sensible price. There's no manual (nobody buys manuals)

You don't need electric Nannies if you drive in a sensible fashion - people drove fast cars for many years without them.
As for the last part, I believe that people are more led by what the press says than the other way around. Hence the rise of cup holders, suvs, and flappy paddles. If they had all been derided instead of extolled, I'm sure they wouldn't be as popular as they sadly are.

regarding dilution of the brand, yesterday on my bike i pulled up behind a new MB 220 d saloon. it was a rather fetching red.
however it had AMG next to the 220d characters and an embarrassing little black spoiler note/bump that im sure added to its performance no end.
what got me as it ragged its way from the lights was the prominence of the AMG letters, which didnt look aftermarket, so must be part of the styling from factory.
i thought m sport/s/rs line models had small badges designating them as such, not letters across the rear next to the model numbers.
the prominence of these would lead the ignorant to think that it was a full fat AMG model.
am i mistaken in this not being an aftermarket addition, or do all AMG trim line models, plaster AMG on the boot where you would think it was official designation, actually relevant to the car, rather than just trim?

I dont think the AMG badges are standard on the back on non AMG cars, but yes the styling of the AMG Line cars can replicate very closely to the full fat AMG cars.however it had AMG next to the 220d characters and an embarrassing little black spoiler note/bump that im sure added to its performance no end.

Or are you just typing stuff about a car you’ve not even seen in the flesh?
I think the writer(s) of these reviews should spend a bit more time fact checking and a little less time in the thesaurus.. The M140i isn't even 3 years old but he/she states it is 'older still' than the 5 year old Golf R and Audi S3.
I can't comment on the other two and appreciate the M140i (brought in during 2016) was basically an engine and interior upgrade but still, let's see some accuracy please.

Looks too much like a tarted up SEAT.
You're not going to park it, glance back & go Wow!
VERY old people will associate A35 with a dinky little Austin saloon from the 1950's
I would if I had in yellow and parked it next to a beach You're not going to park it, glance back & go Wow!

That looks good aggressive / purposeful, colour well I’m sure you could choose one that gelled for you but I like it (wouldn’t buy yellow personally unless a Lamborghini or Corvette but hey )

Horrible dash, no manual gearbox, nasty styling, and a £48000 price tag? No way.
Not one person will pay £48k for this. They’ll “finance” them and then pretend they’re rich because they have a Merc AMG that cost “fifty thousand” when in reality they’re paying £350pm and nicely overdrawn at the bank

I hope your wife leaves the merc salesman, comes back to you and ends your eternal heartache.

Not one person will pay £48k for this.If someone choses to finance that on a cheap PCP or PCH deal then thats their prerogative.

The M140i has the B58 engine and RWD. It is the two things that always get mentioned, a straight six and rwd,
Who writes this unrelenting, unfounded p1sh?!?
Completely agree, that's the whole attraction of the M140i.. the engine that is more potent than the N55 in the M2. Who writes this unrelenting, unfounded p1sh?!?
Frankly I haven't read a decent article on here by Matt Bird, his last article on the M140i was quoting you could buy one for £14k and remap it to 440bhp. I think he assumed an early M135i had the same B58 engine and hence the same output from a remap. No excuse for poor product knowledge.
