They must have got bored of permanently camping out on the A64 at Taddy, Malton and Barton Hill then as you never used to see them on the A1.
Borough bridge this was.

Sure enough they were sat on the A64 two weeks later, hiding under the bridge before the Acomb turn off.

The poster that mentioned Police cut backs has missed the point by a country mile. It’s not the Police you have to worry about, no self respecting Copper would do anyone for 79mph on a motorway.

It’s the fking road safety partnerships and their speed awareness courses. Big business you know.

At night, if I use the M25/M23 (airport lifts etc), I just cruise between 80-100. It all depends on the car as well, age, brakes, tyres, condition etc.
Doubtful.

M25 has been speed camera-ed for years and so you won't be going much
over 80mph
Doubtful indeed. Apart from the Hadecs, nothing else works. I’ve used it daily/weekly for the past 30 years, and somehow I’ve managed to avoid them. I only tend to use lanes 2.5/3.5 or the German car one as I have places to be wink

I went that way a few weeks ago and on the west (York) bound carriageway there were two of the buggers a couple of miles apart - that's pretty sneaky!

The M40 between the M25 and Oxford is the only bit where I'll stretch the car's legs a bit more (and where I regularly get passed by cars which must be into 3 figures). I imagine this reflects the relative lack of policing on that stretch of motorway.
I frequently see camera vans on the bridges on that stretch and the other day there was one on the London bound carriageway, tucked off to the left behind the barrier on the uphill bit from junctions 6 to 5 - a most odd location, I guess hoping to catch people out who thought the same.
Ditto to that.

That section of the M40 nearly always has a camera van on one of the bridges, and rarely see big speeders.
When you are past Oxford you can usually make good progress.

North Yorkshire have a hard on for it. Shortly after on the same journey I saw another camera van setting up.

80 in light to medium traffic with cruise on. Good planning means I rarely have to switch cruise control off and I can overtake in lane 3 quick enough to be out of the way without annoying people. Also not worried about being pulled so only thing to watch out for is cameras.

The most annoying thing is people who can't maintain speed, and have poor lane discipline. If people could manage that it would be a lot easier on the motorway.

70 in heavy traffic if I can manage it, but normally stick cruise on around 60 and adjust accordingly. Once again, good planning means I rarely touch the brake or have to turn off cruise control.

Anything above 80 isn't worth it unless you know where cameras are and if traffic is almost non-existent. Just keep an eye out for fast approaching/sneaking up cars.

Have my speed warning set to 85 so very rarely go over that although I cruised back in the early hours from Holyhead to London over Xmas at 95-100, was nice making proper progress with no traffic. Waze is great for cameras /cops alright only thing it doesn't show are the unmarked cars...got done by one of those in Belgium last yr when north of a ton, luckily only fined cop was pretty sound about it.

Why 80? Because you’re getting a ticket through at 80 (sat nav indicated). May as well do 85mph...

You’d save so much time just 1mph faster though laugh

Motorways are boring at any remotely sensible speed, and the 3 miles of urban driving that any long trip inevitably starts and finishes with knackers average speed anyway thanks to traffic lights, roundabouts etc. so I very rarely bother travelling above 75 (but will squeeze up to 90 to get past things and out of someone’s way if needed). Better on fuel, less road and wind noise, no chance of a tug or a flash (oo-er).

As soon as traffic starts building at all you end up with chaos in the outermost lanes as MLMs, road captains, folks just trying to get places and the Bavarian rocket brigade all compete for the same space with wildly differing viewpoints over how to best occupy it, so I go with the flow in the inside lane and pass the lorries when the opportunity presents itself. Generally the least hassle. This is mainly West Midlands though, so fully appreciate they’re busy roads pretty much all the time.

When did we stop using Leptons as the units for measuring speed on PH?

I tend to drive at 80 BUT just lately I’ve seen speed camera vans overlooking the m62 m1 and A1M so try to do 70 now although on the A64 yesterday I usually do 70 but was doing an indicated 79-80 and passed a speed camera van so bricking it for the next 14 days

My advice in West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire stick to 70mph

I must be charmed - I live in North Yorkshire and use the A64 past York a fair bit, also the A1, usually do 80+ and have never had any trouble. Ditto the M6 from Kendal to Penrith - that usually taken at nearer 90 and likewise, never been pinged. I bet by this time next week I'll have 9 points having said that!

I have the speed alarm set at 100 if it bongs I ease off a bit usually around 95 but it may creep up so I have the alarm set.
Got done on the M62 at an average of 99mph few years back in of all things an Astra diesel van.

Speed bong laugh. Sounds like drugs.

I don't know how I've got this far in my motoring life without having a speed bong.

Yours would probably be set at 40.

I was passed by one of those whilst I was travelling at about 75. He was in lane three travelling at well over the limit. I then moved into lane 3 to overtake a string of cars which saw me exceed the limit by quite a bit and catching the car that had passed me. He then politely flashed some blue lights in the rear window for a couple of seconds to advise to me to drop the speed down, which I duly did. There are some good ones out there if you're not going daft. smile

They get interesting when you weave in and out of the traffic, particularly on a motorbike around 120 - 190mph
