Buy an M5 - cheaper and probably better.

How much! Bonkers.
I guess it's arguable whether any car is worth six figures, but this is cheaper and faster than the Panamera Turbo S so it's competitive for its class. Whether cars in this class are enough better than those in the class below (the M5, E63, etc.) to justify the price hike is probably just a matter of personal opinion.

Does it come with underbody neons to match the interior?

Engineered to trump the Panamera Turbo

As an academic interest, would like to see which is better in the handling department. The Porsche has the more advanced underpinnings but perhaps that is superflous for intuitive handling.

Lots of choice now in this segment. Personally I would probably stay with a 'simple' M5 that may be a tad 'boring', but at least is still comfortable, which is the main reason to buy such a lardy car imho.

Out of interest, in what way is the Panamera's chassis "more advanced" than the Merc? I don't really know much about these big cars but they look superficially very similar?

That interior.
Looks like cross between an outtake from the film ‘Tron’ and a feature by the chemically-addled idiots on Max Power magazine...

I though it looked bad from the outside.
And then I saw the picture of the interior.

The CLS 63AMG shootingbrake, is better looking, same underpinnings, same running gear, more practical and 30-40% cheaper - no brainer!
There is no CLS shooting brake anymore. And the previous generation was also based on the previous generation E class with those underpinnings, not the current 4 litre turbo etc. A fine car it was, but you can't compare them like you have.
Indeed old one was RWD and 5.5 biturbo not the newer 4.0

Was a handsome and rare thing, I loved mine.

This new one looks like it definitely needs to be seen in the metal.

As for the interior and dash I have similar in my E and in daily use it’s good I have to say.

Other colours are available for the fairly lights as is an off button !

I've got a semi looking at that! I think it's just a Pavlovian response as I am expecting a lap dancer to enter my private booth any second.

I'm a fully paid up AMG fan boy but this car makes no sense to me. I have trouble understanding what would make one purchase this over the E63S.

Just not sure about the rear design, from the front it has real presence and a nice blend of aggression and style but as you get towards the back it looks a little soft. Hate those flip up spoilers too.

If i wanted a 2 + 2 and had the wherewithal I'd take a used AM Rapide.

Okay, so looking at the side profile, I question whether someone like me could be comfortable in the back. I'm 6'4", and the way the roof line appears to taper at the rear, I'm guessing I wouldn't fit comfortably in the back.

Just the idea of a 4 door coupe, seems a little odd to me as a consequence.

I'm not usually a fan of four door Coupes but I do like this with it being a hatchback, it is stunningly quick plus very practical too. Wish I had the money for one.

I'm an AMG fan but that side profile is awful, looks like a Mondeo.

Front looks nice, rear acceptable but the side profile unacceptable.

Hopefully looks better in the flesh.

I still find it amazing that Mercedes can build so many different variants of its cars, vans and SUVs and still make profits. I get it that there is a lot of platform sharing but they target so many niches that surely they don't sell more than a couple hundred or a couple thousand of cars like this one (which is very much a small niche) such as this one globally?

Shared underpinnings make it economically viable.

Agreed. I'm on my 3rd AMG product and I'm totally on board with the downsizing etc etc and I thought I could buy into this car. However as mentioned I can't see the value in this over any form of the E63 (or maybe even S63?).

I know I'll love it in the flesh and all that, but when it's time to sell my C63s coupe for a daddy wagon, I can't see myself going anywhere other than an E63s.

That looks like those little "Neon Tetra" tropical fish were the inspiration for that colour scheme.

Where does this fit with the CLS, swoopy 4 door or swoopy 4 door, what am I missing ?

One is based on a large 'generic' passenger car platform (Merc MRA), the other is a dedicated 'large sports car' platform (MSB) only shared with the new (rather good apparently) Bentley Conti GT. A bit as if the Panamera would be based on the MLB evo platform (Audi A4) it wouldn't be as good as it is now...

But proof is in the pudding...

Get an E class, convert it to a CLS, charge more, convert it to a GT, charge a lot more!

So Mercedes with the GT are doing what BMW are doing with the 8 series. Taking a very uninteresting platform, dressing them up, and charging a huge amount for them. It's OK, nobody will notice....
