Ferrari F40 LM: Pic of the Week

Well, it just had to be. Happy winter, internet...

RM Sotheby's hosts some of the world's greatest automotive auctions, chock full of mouthwatering super, classic and racing cars. You might think that the calibre of the machines on offer would be enough to entice any buyer wealthy enough to place a bid, but of course many sellers still look to go the extra mile to make their lot stand out.

Luckily for us. With the results often being some of the most stunning images around, any number of which would make a worthy candidate for POTW. Our choice this week comes from Sotheby's forthcoming Paris auction, of which it is one of the stars; because an F40 LM is always going to be one of the stars, no matter what company it keeps.

This particular car was just the third F40 ever built, and was apparently used extensively by the factory as a pre-production prototype. Following that it became one of the 19 cars to be converted to either F40 LM or F40 Competizione specification, going on to compete in the 1995 and 1996 Le Mans 24 hours, as well as multiple other races. The full gallery is worth having a look through, but this shot in particular caught our eye. The car is instantly recognisable, stunningly beautiful and, against the backdrop of snowy ground and winter sun, the perfect muse to adorn our desktop backgrounds this week. You're welcome.

1996 was the first year my son and I went to LM and I well remember this car being among several F40 entries. Other notable cars that year were a Honda NSX and a Ferrari 333SP.

Just think what their performance was like compared to nearly everything else when they were new.
People didn't seem to make such a fuss about turbo v n/a in those days.

F40 is just about the only 'modern' Ferrari that has something magical over it. For me. Trancends the components it is made off, and I'm not talking about the brand...

Great image, but the twig bottom left?? Should have got rid of it pre-shot or Photoshop.
