RE: UK firm launches rugged Delica D:5 Terrain camper

I'm sure this is a lovely camper, but to compare it with a new VW California is some way off the mark.
For an arguably more reasonable reference, our Danbury conversion of a 2013 VW T5.1 cost £33k in mid-2016. Obviously the Delica comes with lots of stuff like 4WD etc, but balanced against it being a conversion an older base vehicle.

I also find it a very, very mysterious area. Why is a 20 year Ford or Bedford with some formica covered MDF and, if you're particularly unlucky, a nasty toilet still worth multiple times more than the boggo van?
I'd rather spend a grand or two on the finest tents, bedding and solar energy and stick them in a car.
I can see the sense in a massive RV. Anything below that would make me want to hang myself.
Me too - fools are easily parted with their money. It's a "lifestyle" thing and people see these plastic outdoorsy chumps coming and see easy pickings. I'd rather spend a grand or two on the finest tents, bedding and solar energy and stick them in a car.

Talk about missing the point! It's a life style choice and hotels and ABNB etc have got sweet f***all to do with it
But I am not. You buy a campervan presumably to sleep in - if not then that is even dumber than I could comprehend. For the same outlay you could drive a really special car and have change to stay in something nicer than a nasty tin foil and MDF lined van with cut outs in the roof and side. They're ridiculous things and without exception driven by ridiculous people. If you're big in the outdoors, buy a decent tent and rucksack and carry the thing rather than drive the ultimate expression of douche bag.

£34k buys an LS460 Lexus (and a much much newer one than that old heap) with enough change to stay in hotels, self catering or Air B&B.
I travel and stay out a lot but never in a month of Sundays could I bring myself to pay £34k for a 10yr old van.

Is sleeping in it the only reason to buy a camper van though? Before we had kids we used to use ours to go kayaking - chuck them in the back for travelling, and you've got somewhere to change in and out of your kit, and you can make a brew when you come off the water. Same with mountain biking and climbing. Its like having a transit for your kit that you can also change in, cook in, and keep out of the weather in.
My wife uses it for days out with the kids. They eat in the van rather than macdonalds, and I wouldn't be surprised if she's gone to the beach with them today in the snow knowing that as soon as they get cold she can bundle them back in and warm them up again whilst playing a game of cards and drinking some hot chocolate.
We do use ours for camping, but that's by no means the only use we get out of it.

A very stupid one. You could for the same money drive a nice car and stay in something nicer overnight. I have dogs. I also like to mountain bike. And I like remote places.
I can go hiking in the hills or mountains, take the dogs with me and then get back to the camper, get some hot food and a kip, all while still being in the heart of the mountains with no other people around me. Which is just what I want. Last thing I want is to check into some hotel and be forced to share my space with people like you.
back to my earlier point of campervans- two very good reasons to have one as a young bloke.
women.
if your in the middle of nowhere and girls are faced with going back to a tent/car- trust me, having a warm camper, with booze and a gas fire works a treat.
activities.
again, if you've been caving and yr cold/wet through for the last 8 hours, or surfing, or kayaking or whatever- there is a lot to be said for being able to strip wet kit off, chuck it in a watertight barrel, get a brew on, get some food cooking and warm up.
I personally detest the VW van scene thing of polishing junk up and sitting in fields, pretending yr camping/livin the "ley" dreams at chuffin Van fest. well worth a £30k resto on a 70's van to achieve that. when they were £500, that's when they were fun.

Agree with all of that. The VW "scene" is total and utter nonsense and I run away from it and anyone into it, as fast as possible.women.

Please stay in your van - I cannot abide dogs so if it means your dogs are away from me - all the better I have dogs. I also like to mountain bike. And I like remote places.

That said - I go to the hills and mountains and find that once I am sleeping in a hotel/B&B (non dog friendly naturally) I am supporting a local business and hot hotel food is better than anything I can make and a real bed is better than anything

You are weird.
Dunno - plenty people like hotels and don't like dogs I don't have a camper, but I do like mountain biking, track days and do have a dog so it is something I'm considering. I'd buy a van and convert it myself though.

So buy an estate car with a back rack...you'll get a much nicer/newer one for the same outlay. I don't have a camper, but I do like mountain biking, track days and do have a dog so it is something I'm considering. I'd buy a van and convert it myself though.
