Now, there's a plate which reads just fine without a wonky font misspacing of letter or even extra bolts to stop it falling off. I have a private plate which I purchased nearly 30 years ago. It has my initials and my birthday (date) and is quite vain I know but it's just very personal to me. It was also quite a good investment because I know it's worth much more than I paid for it; although I can't ever imagine selling it.
Call me a hypocrite when I now say that I find some private plates to completely 'naff'. Spelling out words. Altering letters/numbers so they (try to) mean something else or mis-spacing letters/numbers is just not right IMHO.

I have one too and quite agree. Call me a hypocrite when I now say that I find some private plates to completely 'naff'. Spelling out words. Altering letters/numbers so they (try to) mean something else or mis-spacing letters/numbers is just not right IMHO.
Mine's a number 1 that was issued free in the 1930s and has been in the family ever since. It doesn't spell anything - I've Googled to check - and has never been allocated to a car registered outside it's original county of issue.
It's been on cars taking generations of brides and grooms to family weddings and funerals and on cars that took my dad and uncle off to war and on cars that bought newborn babies home from hospital and on cars competing in rallies and on touring holidays round Europe in the late 40's and 50's.
I expect it's worth quite a lot but money is meaningless because its actually worth way more than that. It's a piece of family history that my son or grandson will have one day.
I dislike the modern trend of regarding number plates as materialistic status symbols and particularly share your contempt for people who think you can spell words with numbers or who feel the need to draw attention to themselves by misrepresenting them.
