Rather I'd suggest I have the mental capacity to quickly identify the difference between numbers and letters and use them appropriately and not descend to the level of attempting to fool anybody by pretending they're interchangeable.

A fake Rolex or artificial suntan or surgically enhanced tits or a wardrobe crammed with imitation designer labels or indeed any attempt at spelling words with numbers can only ever be be a pretentious attempt at imitating the real thing and never actually be the genuine real thing.

Recognising the difference between the two is important. smile

Why do you care what others spend their money on?

I don't.

What does rattle my cage a bit are shallow pretentious people imitating status symbols in an vain attempt to impress others. After all nobody really likes the Gob in the pub flaunting the thirty Euro Rolex he bought in a Lanzarote market and pretending he's minted or the Knob sticking ebay M badges on the boot of his knackered diesel BMW and pretending he's got the ultimate driving machine now do they?

Awful lot of that aspirational fake it to make it here in the Essex Badlands... smile

Think that was a fair price?? I'd say so
Based on what others are asking I’d say that’s a fair price for a ‘known’ plate.

Here’s Jaguar 5teve, clearly he doesn’t have the mental capacity (normally a low IQ) to make the link in similarity between numbers / letters as your brain, generally, automatically does it for you because they look similar, not because they are direct substitutions.

Not at all comparable.

It is a 5 and a 1, it isn’t a S and L, what does it look like not what it is, that’s the difference.

It’s a bit of fun

I agree with and ‘get’ the grievance towards modified plates, or plates that try and look like something else (which would fit your analogy above), but this isn’t one of them.

A lot of the real designer stuff is overpriced and not much better than the cheaper alternative (e.g watches, clothes, etc).

So if said 'Gob' had a real Rolex and a real M3, with a non age related plate you'd be fine with that I take it?

I think it's quite funny you get so upset over these trivial things.

Agreed, I think it’s a fantastic plate, I bid on it but didn’t win it.

Such silly plates are perfect for identifying those fellow humans you wish to avoid at all costs, in other words those pre-occupied with themselves & their possessions.
Nice to have nice things BUT come the New Order Post Coronavirus when we will be judged by who we are, what we do for others & our intelligence to evaluate what we need versus what we want such people will be seen as vacuous & superfluous & most certainly neither admired or envied & that will hurt.

Of course. Who'd you rather spend a evening in the pub with then?

Someone who really does have nice things, someone who really doesn't care about having nice things or somebody who likes pretending they have nice things when they actually haven't.

I can only pick two out of three and they'll almost certainly be the same two as almost everybody else.

A good friend of mine has a few (dozen) super clones. He just likes watches and would never afford the ones he fancies. I’m sure in your minds eye he’d be walking into a pub with his wrist extended and sleeve rolled up, clutching a £50 note with a load of fivers underneath it, but no.
I also spend time with those who not only can afford these watches, but pretty much anything else. If it’s not a new IWC it’ll be what deposit on some various car, boat or plaything.

The conversations and good times are infinitely in favour of that person who you’d avoid. The others, I’m sure they’d impress you, but I’m not sure what you’d think that you’d have in common?

So no. The shallow one IMO would be you. I guess that’s why you own an old Jaguar, so you can take the position of a moral high ground as an ‘enthusiast’, when in reality it’s no different to a chap with a fake Rolex. Never judge a book....isn’t that what they say?

But I have seen that you struggle with these things. If you ‘speed’ you are dangerous. Own a clone, you’re a ‘chav’. The world isn’t t binary old boy and there are more than two colours in the rainbow. Live and let live, you might even enjoy it.

Lastly you’d never know these £600 clones were faked, next to a genuine watch you need a strong loupe for the task. It’s ironic actually that most who moan about ‘fakes’ don’t know that the homage industry is actually something people buy into, and they probably spend more in total on their hobby than the snobs that criticise smile

Anyway. Roundabout way of saying you’re totally wrong. On everything.

It helps very much, thanks.

You'll have already noticed I'm all over threads involving manifestations of egotism, entitlement and vanity because those attributes in people genuinely interest me. Not only because they're both a edifying background to some distance learning material I'm slowly working my way through but also a useful tool in understanding why people do the things they do.

The reasoning for example behind why people think a £50k Rolex is better than a £5 Casio is fascinating as one tells the time equally well as the other and the conclusion I favour is the Rolex represents £5 of watch and £49995 of ego. An old two grand Jaguar does the same thing as a new sixty grand one does but unlike a new one it's entirely unburdened by any implications of wealth or status which is exactly how I like my stuff to be.

A benefit of learning about the compulsion for such things as egotism, entitlement and vanity in others is that knowledge gives you better tools to ensure there's as little of that as possible within yourself. smile
