I am not sure you completely grasp the industrial realities of car production. There isn't such a thing as a LHD or RHD, they are just options like a sunroof. Splitting factories would defeat the object of mass production and lose a catastrophically disproportional amount of economies of scale. It's all about critical mass.
It may work if you have huge volumes and/or can afford to sacrifice production costs in case of a massive and sustained surge in demand but in this case I doubt it would make sense.
Ordinarily this may well be true but the JLR operation functions in its present state because of our single market participation.

Now within a quarter we won’t be in this.

So I suspect the losses (given how Speth et al blete about Brexit) from our withdrawal from the single market will be great for JLR. What might not make economic sense right now will make sense in a few months time.

The LR range is bloated - streamlining models and making them within their respective markets makes a lot more sense now. To an extent VW, BMW and Volvo do this with the US market to circumvent US tarrifs on EU made cars.

The LR range consists of six models. BMW will soon have seven SUVs in its range and it's not traditionally an SUV brand.

I like the new Brexit angle to an SUV thread. That’s a nice little evolution.

It’s interesting that the women hate thing gets dropped when the SUV has the SVR letters. I guess that’s because it’s inconceivable for a Doris to drive such a manly device.

I think the whole ‘orange/chav’ thing could do with some work. A few tweaks and some new phrases would be good. There must be some new code words for ethnic minorities washing around these communities?

Likewise the whole inferiority angle should have some new material and not just rely on ‘but they look down on me’ and ‘they can’t actually afford it’. I mean, it’s classic material and it still works but even football chants evolve.

But it is good to see a return of the ‘If it’s not made by VW then it’s wrong’. That’s been missing for a while and it always brings a lightheartedness to an SUV thread amongst all the racism, sexism and general flat roofed nature of the dislike.

We’ve only had one mention of ‘I know a rich person and this makes me better than you.’ That seems a bit weak. We should usually have had the counter of ‘I Know more rich people and that makes me even better’ lodged by now. But this could show an underlying cultural shift in society that knowing rich people isn’t the killer play that it once was?

14 pages and there’s been a lot of good work by some PH stalwarts but if I’m honest, it’s been quite traditional, generic and formulaic so it’s hard to give it much more than 6 out of 10.

It would be really nice if we could all work together to bring in some new material. At a minimum we must be able to come up with some new code words for non WASPs or a fresh way to attack women. I’m sure the whole ‘envy’ thing could be restyled also.

It’s important to evolve or we risk having threads swamped by savage, backward people who post horrors such as ‘ I quite like that’. ‘It’s not my bag’ or that total disgrace phrase of ‘unfortunately I couldn’t afford one.’ Non haters and well adjusted people have no place on such threads.

Love the comparisons with the Macan. Presumably it’s not like for like Turbo vs SVA (seeing as no one has driven an SVA yet), as I have a non-hot Macan as a courtesy car this weekend and it’s horrid.

I’d take an equivalent Velar any day of the week. Stop believing things are better just because they’re German, and I say that as a lover of both nations’ products.

BMW are a manufacturer about 10x the size and with no deal brexit won't be so drastically affected.

There is so many overlaps in the LR range and the Velar and RRS should be replaced by one model leaving the top RR and a mid sized car. The Evoque should stay and discovery sport go - and the discovery should live on as one model.

I reckon you would make a lot of money out consulting for JLR on industrial strategy and product development. It looks like they haven't even thought about the ideas you came up with in this thread. They really must employ some seriously incompetent executives. Give them a call on Monday perhaps ?

ST4, it's fair to say that you don't understand SUVs or business.

Let's just take your one example in the quoted post. Evoque vs. Discovery Sport, presumably to you these models have huge overlap and that's why one (the best seller) should go. The reality is that they appeal to radically different buyers with very different needs. Killing one would not increase sales of the other. You are just slaughtering a cash cow and destroying economies of scale.

To put it in terms of the pre-JIT and international supply chain industrial world that you wish to step back to - the Evoque is a Marina coupe or a two-door Triumph Dolomite, appealing to the sporting man or his good lady. Whilst the Disco Sport is an Allegro or Marina estate, built for lugging children and luggage around the country.

That they happen to both be mid-length 4x4s SUVs does not make them the same. The distance that a car sits off the ground does not make them magically all the same once they are a similar length and ride-height.
