I see loads and loads of Land Rovers, not so many SVRs, and even fewer SVAs. I also see loads and loads and loads of Audis, and recent RS versions aren’t a very rare sight.

Not sure of your point.

Looking at a new car and asking if it advances anything over the old seems perfectly reasonable to me. And I stand by that position - this new Velar is nice but it advances nothing over what JLR have been making for 10 years or more now.
Drive a first generation RR Sport, then drive a new one and tell me things haven’t moved on.
I have. A lot.

For sure the new one feels great but TBH, once the "new" novelty wears off, the differences are not as much as you realise.

The new RRS I drove rattled more than the old one, I would add... wink

I see what you're saying, but I think these new Range Rover variants are being designed to compete with niche SUV's offered by other manufacturers, so that they have every base covered so to speak. With regards to offering volume "regular/everyday cars", that's never been what Land Rover have been about as a company, Range Rover's in particular have always been high end 4x4's/SUV's. Their business model is clearly to keep Range Rover as a premium brand and charge more for their product, rather than offer stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap products with the RR badge tacked on.
I'm not sure about that. See more new or nearly new Range Rovers on the road now than ever, probably between 80-100 of the things every day on my 1/2hr commute to work. Ten a penny, not special or rare in any way - which is odd really considering the purpose many seem to have been bought for?

If I take my Lotus Elise to work however then I'll probably see just one or two others on the road every month. If I take the C5 RS6 as I normally do then last time I saw another on the road was about 2 years ago and I've never seen another 'Plus' like mine.
The fact that there are people out there with money out there to afford a Range Rover is not really the point, it's still a relatively expensive car, though the Evoque is more affordable to many in fairness. The poster that I replied to above seemed to be suggesting that there should be even more affordable cheaper models/variants on offer compared to what is currently available, so I was disagreeing with this specifically.

Plus, I can't remember the last time I even saw another Mazda MX6 on the road, so I guess that means it's a very exclusive and special vehicle, even more so than an Elise. I'm sure all the common or garden Range Rover drivers will be jealous. wink

Andy20vt - unless you work at JLR, I am gobsmacked you can see 80-100 RRs every day on a 1/2 hour commute!?!?!?

Okay so I live in a fairly affluent area but really, they are very common. I can count 8 RRs right now looking down from our office window into the car park across the road!

Nothing what so ever to do with the thread.

Another no garage dipstick troll for the forums. Perfect.

The Velar is a good looking car. I would be interested to know how the pop out door handles fared in the polar vortex conditions in the USA. I believe they were engineered to work down to -10°C. Temperature has fallen below that on accession even here in the UK. Anyone know?
A good question and one I can now answer. It bothered me as even the non pop out LR door handles would freeze. Not quite -10, but they worked fine over several days. I doubt they are heated but they are designed to punch out quite positively, so not the problem I was perhaps expecting. The rest of the car is brilliant too.

What’s your point? There are cars from the 1950s which can still do the everyday car thing, just like a brand new one - should we ignore all the improvements in performance, NVH, economy, handling, technology etc. as pointless?

Or are you saying that, somehow, Land Rover is magically fooling everyone and other manufacturers have advanced further?

Talk about cars in a car thread? Nah, go on about perceived wealth/image and made up customers potentially using finance.

Fine, if that's the forum now, it is what it is. fk me.

Less Chav Chariot than the RRS SVR. Tick.

Makes people on the internet furious. Tick.

Decent PCP deals available. Probably, Tick.

Tempted to get one, then emblazon my pcp deal, annual income, amount of money in savings and credit score on the side.

Then park it near Andy's office so he can enjoy looking at it all day.

Still not sure about the Velar, it is slowly eating it’s way into my desire.

I have to say, in the new blue and black roof, it looks stunning. I’ve always loved JLR’s V8......so this is not the SVR, eh? So bodykit and new wheels and if the price goes higher than this SVA, it’ll benmore expensive than an RRS SVR, eh?.....

Make sure you do it when he’s not spending “a lot of time in the Alps”.

This will only be around until the engines stop being made next year, so maybe the SVR will appear with the next (BMW) V8.

I'll have to see if our skiing weeks align. I'll be spending a lot of time in the Alps for two weeks too. It'll be 24/7, actually.

Of course you do smile

What’s the problem with people buying cars that they like such that those vehicles become popular ?

Seems a strange thing to take umbrage over.

I’d suggest the difference in chassis technology and therefore general ride and driving characteristics is fairly sizeable beteeen the generations.
