The original LS400 was quite elegant and well balanced in it's design. The update to it made it look pretty horrific though and I agree, pretty much everything else they have done is a long way from pretty.

All look amazing. Compared to some of the munters of the Bangle BMW era they are mona lisa's...

For all the knobs moaning about how dreadful 30mpg is, pray tell what full sized 400bhp petrol powered SUV you've had that could average better?

Comparisons with 2+2 cars weighing 500KG less with 50bhp less, that (implausibly) managed to average 26mpg (10% worse economy) to this 400bhp AWD seven seater monster show just how damned impressive that economy figure is. Full sized 400bhp SUVs a decade ago would be lucky to get 20mpg and mid teens was more likely, irrespective of PH bullstters getting 30mpg+ in a supercharged range rover on a 2 mile commute that was uphill both ways.

I can't wait to try one, that electric assist combined with a supercharger and then turbochargers should mean this goes like absolute hell from tickover with none of the soft mushy laggy nonsense you get from a turbodiesel.

Every single economy comparison in this thread is patently idiotic.

I always thought Volvo should have just bought in Toyota engines in V6 and I4 design and hybrid drivetrains. They buy in the Aisin gearboxes. An S90 with the V6 from the Evora - now that would be a great car
Why would Toyota sell to them? Where do people get this idea you can just go to another manufacturer and say "I'll have 200,000 of those a year please". Aisin, like Denso, is only part-owned by Toyota just as other suppliers have been spun out of OEMs, so they can and will supply to anyone. Toyota would be supplying to a direct rival to Lexus. there's pretty much no incentive for them to do that.

Just because other makers also make fugly cars, I'm not convinced that defends the position that most Lexus aren't also.

Doesn't mean they wouldn't though. Even if they "lost" x sales from Lexus, if the money bought in by the engines sales was significantly more, it would still be good business.

Yep. This. I am slightly surprised that Toyota didn't try Volvo or indeed Lotus. In the end Geely got both of them.

The fact that no one really does it outside of JVs, selling/licensing older designs for emerging market use or tiny trickles to Morgan, Lotus, et al. pretty much suggests it isn't good business. It is if you're an engine manufacturer like Cummins, not if you're a vehicle manufacturer.
