Atrocious power delivery is the problem. If you look at the dyno graphs of standard cars all over the internet, there's a dip in power at 3500 rpm.
The figures don't tell the whole story, if you keep it at 5000rpm or more all the time it's fine, not what you'd call slow, but you simply cannot drive them like that all the time.
They really don't need more power, just more mid range.

I acknowledge that's the case. I also know that it's pretty easily fixable ( http://www.tuningdevelopments.co.uk/product_info.p...)The figures don't tell the whole story, if you keep it at 5000rpm or more all the time it's fine, not what you'd call slow, but you simply cannot drive them like that all the time.

...if you can accept the idea of modification, which I appeciate not everyone does. That is part of what makes the GT86/BRZ such a marmite car. As a canvas to work on, if that's your thing, it's great. Even more so now with decent second hand examples starting at about £10K. I'm glad at least a few people have bought them new though!
It is weird to find a car that seems like it's been made for the second owner (i.e. the one more likely to modify it...)

There is another slight problem that often doesn't get as much press .... in that the base cars are commonly down on power against the manufacturers claims. We all know that manufacturers claims can be generous at times but when the starting point is low in the first place this does not help does it.The figures don't tell the whole story, if you keep it at 5000rpm or more all the time it's fine, not what you'd call slow, but you simply cannot drive them like that all the time.

To put this into context we have had the torque dip removed by way of some light NA mods, it works incredibly well completely filling the torque gap and with a circa 20% increase in power to boot. Engine response & flexibility is much improved but if you just look at the BHP numbers in isolation then it's quite shocking, we started at 170.5bhp (stock) and increased to 204.7bhp (manifold, filter, exhaust & map).
( Appreciate that these will vary between rolling roads and note our car hasn't many miles on it yet so still a bit tight I think )
I couldn't give a monkeys about the numbers and in lightly modified form the car drives pretty well on a give & take b road, but I think the above contributes to peoples disappointment with the performance and it rarely gets mentioned in the press.

Foul. Not sure this was a massive sales success in a decent colour.
PistonHeads where car sales matter........ Polishing a turd springs to mind.

Sort of off topic, but someone in the US made their own BRG version (of the BRZ), and it actually looks better than Toyota's effort:
There's a bunch more pictures of it in the US owners' club forum. It even has a tan interior.

Love the rear screen as well:

I like it, though that blanked off infotainment screen looks awful. They should have popped some classic analogue dials in there for oil pressure and voltage.
Agree 100%plastic blanking plate looks cheap and nasty.
Either a "limited edition 0005 or 19999" type metal plate or like you say some retro dials and, maybe a couple of metal toggle switches
