It was an ironic car to me when I was in my late teens.
Like 10,000 spoons, when all you need is a knife?

Sticking with the pop music theme, Brian Harvey of East 17 had one of these. 'Nuff said.

As for the price, I sold my Turbo 2 for considerably less than this. Although that was 11 years ago.
hehe

Bloody tablet! It was meant to say iconic. smile

Love these, but this is the worst color imho

You would have thought with moder technology you could replace the turbo system with something to get much better linear performance out of it
Yep, Pearl White or Raider Blue for me...

Not half as spiky as the article would have you believe, both in boost terms and handling characteristics. I covered over 100k in the two I owned and whilst immense fun I always thought they were pretty forgiving even when pushed and never found them wayward in the way the article portrays them..
Totally agree, my first 2 cars were R5GTTs and when I was young I used to drive about everywhere as fast as I could. Never had any issues with one, fantastic little cars - really fond memories of both.

Brother got an ex demo in pearl white from Renault back in 88. The mileometer seldom worked for some reason, until I sprayed some WD 40 into the cable, but by then it had done 60k miles and only registered 32. It had an appetite for clutch cables ad was chipped by a company called "detection techniques" with the addition of a bleed valve under the bonnet.

It blew a turbo and was never as fast once it was replaced for some reason. Coupled with fuel pump problems, electrical gremlins and me ttting the front spoiler on a curb didn't help the resale value. HG was always ok though. They also used to eat Michelins.

Still ,for nostalgia purposes alone I'd have another one.

Loved the Raider. The PE teacher at my middle school had one. Would've been new. Replaced her A-reg Nova SR.

My old man has never been into French tin so unfortunately that didn't inspire him to replace his B-reg SR with one.

My brother had one in Pearl white, a mate had one in pure white, while I had a blue 205 GTI 1.9... those were the days.. at the time you thought cars could not get any faster smile

A lot of the problems, flaky starting , sticky cables etc were down to heat buildup/cable passing close to exhaust or hot spot in the engine bay. A few cars of that era suffered with cables getting sticky and tight, eventually snapping. After about the third cable on a friend’s 5GTT car, we wrapped the cable with heat shield which helped a lot - 2 litres in an Escort bay caused similar issues.
Interesting about the spiky handling comments - I remember them as being excellent handling things like the Peugeot 205/309......but admittedly that was 30 years ago

I remember in 1990, we used to go in a pub in Cheadle called the Kenilworth (anyone remember it ?) and occasionally chatted to a couple of car enthusiast guys my mate knew a bit in there, one looked like a cut price Bon Jovi and was building a Cobra Replica and the other had a Mk2 Escort Mexico a I can now only remember as looking like Ferris Buellers mate Cameron, the ones whose dad had the Ferrari.

I had a Mk1 Golf GTI which I though was the dogs bks, Ferris Buellers mate turned up in a new R5GT Turbo and I knew they were quick, thought my Golf wouldnt be that far off, it was fairly brisk, well, until I had a spin in the little Renault, it felt like a different world, I was gutted, it just felt sooo much faster.

What a garage that is above!! Is that a 250 that joins the Trophy and Renault 5?
Thanks! Wanted a garage like I have now for such a long time!

It's not a 250, its an M2.

I've been looking for another Megane R26.R, but can't find one for sale in the colour that I would like. First world problems hey!

I am very lucky!

Correct!

Trophy has been out today for a new battery and drivers side window rubber. After reading this thread today, I might have to get my 5 out tomorrow for a little spin...

Good for you mate. You make your own luck! Excellent car choices. Hope you find the .r. That would finish off your garage nicely.

My brother had an R26 which was a fantastic car. Few tweaks, took some weight out and spent a lot of time at Knockhill.

Kids and mortgages peeled back my non-family car budget but thankfully I lucked upon a local £1k 172 Cup which I have used as a daily for 3.5 years and done 35k in. Love it.

Quite similar.. I had a mk1 xr2 in 1991 which I thought was great until a mate took me out in his GT Turbo. It blew me away... 1 month later and I had one sat on the driveway biggrin

Loved them - despite in/out clutch;breaking clutch cable every 10 k miles; random lecccy problems ; traction problems (wheelspin in 1-4 gears on wet roads) and awful ride.
Are you absolutely sure that was an Uno you bought? Sounds exactly like my 5GTT. Especially the clutch cable - I got to the point of getting the clutch cable changed each service as a precaution, and carrying a spare one in the boot just in case.

I'm not sure that I'd want to even if I could. The wooooaaaa-BABY!!! sense of anticipation that came with an old-school whistly laggy turbo was one of the car's most charismatic features.

+1. On the handling front at least - the boost was definitely spiky. Not that this is a bad thing - modern turbo cars have had all the character sanitised out of them.

Handling-wise though, I don't recall mine being at all touchy as hot hatches went - certainly not in the 205GTI's, or even CRX's class when it came to lift-off oversteer. The only way you could get in trouble was by letting the revs drop low enough under braking for the boost to go away, leaving you unable to power it back into line if the tail started to swing. This may well be where the reputation for dodgy handling came from, as the era of turbo rally weapons hadn't yet impressed "keep the boost up at all costs" into the collective consciousness of Yoof.

I enjoyed it and in the short time I had it I didn't lose much money on it. It wasn't the fastest Mini I have had, but I loved the noise and drama of the bluetooth exhaust. I don't think I ever drove it without it being in its loudest mode!.

It was great fun to drive, and you could exploit all the power and drive it on the limit comfortably. I thought it was well built and looked the part too. The only thing that let it down was the brakes I thought. Under some hard driving they didn't last very long

I've ran mine as a daily for 8 years now. Not one clutch cable or head gasket on sight. I've called the RAC once because I didn't put the fan belt on tight enough and lost it. Just had the turbo refurbed that was one roughly 15000 miles. Looks wise standard but it's 130bhp at the wheels. I would drive it to the moon tommorow. Unfortunately the bodywork is starting to let it down.
