Awesome!!

I'd love to have one to use as a daily!

Ive thought about getting another Clio Trophy with high mileage to use as one... but the wife told me she would leave me if I had two cars the same.
Hope the divorce goes well, plenty more fish in the sea etc etc
Post of the day. And it’s only 10 am.

The clutch cables on these were near enough the same right through the range of that era and were shyte, along with the clutch self adjusting mechanism at the top of the clutch pedal.

The poor starting was mainly down to the turbo being located behind and just below the carb and the heat from that would boil the fuel dry in the carb.

They did improve them over time with various run on fans but it still wasn’t perfect.

Ace cars though and kudos to the daily driver.

At what point does the gearbox surrender, or has time produced strengthened parts?
IIRC it was the weakest link.
Not had a problem with the gear box just overheating and the usual head gasket failure .

I remember eating these up in my 86 Escort RS Turbo.
I had mixed results against them in my xr4x4, I raced one off the line and I got off the line quicker and managed to stay in front. Then I raced another one off the line and I got absolutely blitzed(I'm guessing that one was tuned up a bit!).

My RS Turbo may have been a quick one whistle

Anti Percolation fan. Standard fit on ph2 models I 'think' ph 1.5 had them too. Never had a hot start issue on mine and ran as a daily from 2001-2006. Running a lot more power than standard too. Problem with head gaskets going pop was mainly down to poor understanding of carbs. Even tuner bought 'group A' carbs were a nightmare. Massive main jet and a machined Venturi. Did nothing for correct A/F ratio. In fact it wasn't until many many years later when people realised actually a slighter bigger drilled out main jet but not much and a bored out air corrector jet was much much better. I was a member on RTOC back in the day (in fact joined when it was the R5GTTOC) and it was normal for 220+ bhp R5s rocking around as dailies. Mind you this was like 15 odd years ago now frown

I will say I was an unlucky one with clutch cables. Managed to go through three including the one I bought the car with.

My other issue was snapping the selector fork in the gearbox, caused by constant stupidly fast gear changing.

Miss the car to this day and sadly judging on the strong price market on nice ones now but it looks like another one idea one day ship has sailed .

Had one back in the early 90s.
Remember the salesman asking me to slow down on the test drive.
Unfortunately wrote it off after skidding on ice.
Great little pocket rocket.

Red is the BEST colour for a GTT! (Well, I would say that, mine looked just like that smile )

I did like the metallic blue, too, though, but I wasn't so keen on the Raider blue that came later.

Agree they weren't as lairy as this suggests - I made a couple of stupid mistakes in mind over the 3 years I owned, reckoning I was heading for a wall, field or ditch and each time the car was more capable than me and got me out of trouble.

Great little cars.

PS Found this via a Google search, hence the necropost...

I bought one off my brother. It was quick but had the structural integrity of a mccoys packet.

My over riding memory was coning back from the Farnborough air show. 4 up it averaged 23 mpg.
